A stupid meeting in eastern europe between a bunch of nerds and they change history? It's obvious that these clowns have nothing better to do and are trying to create some action in astronomy so that their budgets/funding will not be cut. This is a step backward for mankind! And i can't believe that there is not much opposition to the declassification of pluto.Pluto to me will always be a planet, screw these assholes. They don't know ****!

Just because Pluto orbits around the Sun in an unusual manner compared to other planets, it has been disqualified from the post of a Planet. Even if Pluto's rotation is different from the rest 8 planets, it is a planet, it was and it will be. The truth is that these scientists were bored and planned to do something to make them famous again, so they cooked up useless propaganda that Pluto is not a planet. Who knows, maybe in a year or two, they will say that the Sun is not a star or the ring around Saturn is a steel plate placed there as a run-way for Alien space-craft.

The argument in and of itself is redundant and has no intellectual merit whatsoever, a few scientists at one end of the world decided that Pluto was definitely a planet. Another group somewhere else said it was questionable, now yet another group of scientists has officially knocked Pluto out of our private sector of the cosmic club. Bottom line Pluto is a small chunk of rock drawn into orbit around our solar unit for God knows how long. It's too far away from the suns heat to maintain an atmosphere it most likely does not contain any metallic substances, has little to no gravity and is being observed by astronomers and astrologists alike while all of us avoid one very potent and pertinent fact. THIS DEBATE WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR US BUT WASTE TIME FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN ARGUE THE RELEVANCE OF A LIFELESS PLANET ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF A SOLAR SYSTEM WE CAN'T EVEN SEE WITHOUT A REMOTE CONTROLLED SATELLITE!

That is very true. But just think that back in those days they didn't have this technology we have now and Pluto is so far away that they thought it was a planet. Maybe, maybe this could be a break through on something. We can't do to much but to sit and watch. Pluto will always be in the history books is just now they have really looked into it. We won't live forever so if they change things we can't do that much about, why worry, all we can do is be proud we new about the planet called Pluto.

I don't think it really matters if they call Pluto a planet or not. Pluto is still there, Pluto is the same as it always was and probably will be for quite some time. So what difference does it make? Personally I would still call it a planet due to the fact that everyone up until now has always been taught that Pluto was a planet.
They always taught that nothing can go faster than the speed of light, but recently they have discovered particles exceeding the speed of light, yet they still teach the old theory that nothing can go faster than the speed of light.

Science is about being exact, and that is exactly why Pluto is now a dwarf or minor planet. The people of the International Astronomical Union gathered because they are THE authority when it comes to classification of stars, planets, and other space objects. And they have been since 1919! Most people just have trouble letting go over things they have grown comfortable with. Pluto was never a planet, it's always just been this piece of cold rock floating out at the end of our system. And now it's official.

the international astronomical union defined three terms "planet", "dwarf planet", and "small solar system body". this does not change anything about the solar system or pluto. it just corrects the mistake of classifying pluto as a planet initially. i have known since i was about twelve that pluto does not have the physical and orbital characteristics that fit the pattern set by the major bodies in the solar system, and later, after the discovery of hundreds of other similar bodies with similar orbits, i knew this was inevitable. this was the right thing to do, believe me. i'm a level four, and i'l soon be a level five.

because pluto orbits the sun, is round, orbits the sun with a bunch of other similar bodies with similar orbits, and is not a satellite it is a dwarf planet.

(1) A planet is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.

(2) A dwarf planet is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

(3) All other objects orbiting the Sun shall be referred to collectively as "Small Solar System Bodies".

Not only nerds, they were Astronomers. The International Astronomical Union. They DO know their ****.

And ever since they did, small-minded people have crowded Answers with questions like this. Pluto is smaller than our moon. It's a Dwarf Planet. Cry me a river.

Pluto is to you a planet only because some one has told it is. Generations from now, people will be saying the same thing if they reclassify it back.

Why, anyone else accept nerdy astronomers gives a crap is really bizarre to me, but this question gets asked approximately once every 17 seconds at the moment....

I agree its bullsh*t but hey I don't live in eastern Europe so I figure I don't have to agree or believe it
It really sucks because I have been teaching my 7 yr old the planet's and now I am supposed to say j/k Pluto isn't really one

My very exhausted mother just served us nine ?

There goes that Mnemonic! Damn and I study so hard in elementary.

Besides it was the only planet found by us Americans. Turn back the wheel of achievement. Keeping it european baby.
