We've all been disappointed, deceived, and rejected by someone or something. The more it happens, the more we see it happening around the world, the more we realize that there's really nothing new under the sun. Hence we become jaded and many times a bit cynical.

Us? Hey, I'm surprised you don't find anything surprising. Personally, I get surprised an average of 2 times a day - people constantly come up with new ways to do that.

It could be argued that nothing ever surprised us. The book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible deals with this. I think we don't get surprised because we need to remain cool at all times. This is sad, because we aren't getting the most out of life. Try something new. Read a book. Take a challenge. Stimulate your senses. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I believe that our definition of 'surprise' has changed. Because of TV shows like "Fear Factor", because of the show everything media, because of the shock jocks on radio, we have become used to excesses. We may be surprised in fact, but we are not overwhelmed. We no longer have the childlike amazement of our world. I am unfortunately, jaded with greed and immaturity of far too many 'leaders'.

Maybe surprise should be thought of as "appreciation" and "wonder"

I think it's because your minds have been influenced by TV. , books and various other things, so today the average human being has 90% more knowledge than a human 10 years ago.
If some one came up to you 10-15 years ago and told you that the U.S. government had been conducting experiments on aliens you'd be shocked.
But if that happens today you'd just say "I knew it!".

With all that happens everyday in the world we have become desensitized. Which in all honesty is really sad. When ever I hear about the latest car bombing in Iraq who killed like at least 10 people I think "that's sad" but I do not really feel that sadness. I know it is wrong and depressing... but I see it everyday.

To be surprised, one must have expectations. Given the grim nature of the present, we have cancelled our expectations.
