In American movies, the British character is normally a Professor, Scientist or the Villain. I know there are several exceptions, but in a lot of films (especially low budget), the token Brit falls into one of these categories.

So in the UK when writers "need add an American character" what are the normal traits or professions they display?

- The rich guy without any taste who keeps talking about himself.
- The fat tourist who is demanding and clueless.
- The young cool guy. (hippy/surfer/rock'n'roller/ skater)
- The self-righteous stubborn guy in his 40's. (military/farmer/bible thumper)
- The corporate type. (black suit, successful in what he is doing, wall street)
- The inbred redneck who drives a beat up pickup truck and chews tobacco.

After living in the UK and the US I find very funny the way both nations interpret each others' accents on the radio:

British in the US: It's usually posh with slow cadence

American in the UK: It's Midwestern with a trace of Texan and very nasal.

As far as characters the stereotype of the American character around the world is a: fat, middle age, colorful, absent minded, good hearted, childish tourist.

If you see Love Actually you'll notice that the show the Americans as ignorant and stupid tourist. They also show the American girls as dumb blonds and they can't resist the charm or the British accent. So in other words the portrait them as easy whores.
