The legit ones are great, but there are tons of fake spyware scanning programs that actually don't do anything at all. The following are legit, free and work great:

Most Anti-virus programs are pretty effective as long as you keep them up to date. I don't think the same can be said for anti-spyware and anti-adware, unless they are made by a major company. Seems like there are too many fly by night spyware/adware programs out there.

I prefer Norton AntiVirus - they have tons of info on viruses, provide updates easily and quickly, and have always give me good customer service.

I use Norton Internet Security with Automatic updates. It includes a firewall and Anit-Virus program. Been using it for a couple years now with ZERO problems.

they are reliable as long as you update them regularly.

For anti virus, I use Norton

for spyware, I use zone alarm
