I think we will end up building chips on the atomic level one day... Intel and others are already building 45nm chips - that is half the thickness of a human hair...

Currently, Intel is working on retooling from white light printing to ultraviolet printing for their circuits. It seems that they have reached a point where the circuits they want to print are now narrower than a single wavelength in the white light spectrum. Going to ultraviolet will allow them to print even thinner circuits. Why is this a factor? The only way to make a processor faster is to make the distance the signal travels shorter. Since electrons flow at the speed of light and you can't alter the speed of light inside a computer chip, the only recourse is to make the distance the electrons travel even shorter than the last chip! That is why now they are also going to multi-processor chip assemblies in the more powerful PCs.

I saw a programme on tv which said that computer chips are halving in size every year and becoming twice as fast.

so a chip can only get so small before they have to have change, and the change will prob be into gas's, no serious it was on a tv programme.

how small can you make the track? the other limit is the chip is getting smaller but the pins required to connect it to the motherboard is not so the casing itself stays the same, unless they start to mount the chips permentally to the board.

Pretty darn small. Quite likely smaller than any of us expect right now. Ever heard of quantum computers? Think somewhere around that size.

Is this such a big deal for you that you need to ask the same Q 3 times and post it in different categories ???

In any case does it matter.

based on current technolgy they are close to the minimum size. There will need to be a fundamental change to get things smaller

Have you checked with a microscope inside the pores of your skin lately;-)

they will keep getting smaller, although the lump of plastic they are mounted to will probably stay the same size....
