We advertised an engine online; we where sent American Express Gift Checks. The bank cashed them; a week later they came back from the federal reserve COUNTERFIT!
Now we have to pay the bank back.I have called every government official I could think of (and was treated like a peice of poop by most). I called news 9. They where at least pleasant. I even called the Comunity Action agency credit counceler; they have yet to get back with me.

We have to go and sign pappers at the bank today at 2:PM to pay back the loan. The people at the bank are just plain rude. They are acting like this is our fault; WE ARE THR VICTOMS! how come rich people who get scammed have there story broadcast on the news and the police investigate... Anyone got any suggestion who I can ask for help?

We DID call the cops! They don't have time; the detective was to buisy. As for falling for this... I am not alone. I was in constant contact with the bank, they assured me this was common practice.

This really stinks, but has gotten to be a fairly common scam unfortunately. In an even nastier version that's out there a lot, the "gift checks" or money orders that someone gives you are for lots more than the value of the item, you are asked to wire the difference to someone usually out of the US, so then you're out your item AND whatever money you wired off.

There's likely a line in your agreement for your bank account that all deposited items are subject to collection, which means if they bounce, the bank gets the money back from you. The bank's job is not to look for counterfeit items. Not totally unreasonable, since it's not their fault, but I can see where you feel strongly that it's not yours either. You were scammed, and the person responsible will probably get away with it unless they're somewhere where you can go to THEIR local authorities and file a complaint. If you shipped the engine, you at least have an address that was good at the time. If they picked it up, I'd guess that any address they gave you was as phony as their gift checks.

Unless the buyer is local and you can find them, the cops aren't likely to do a major investigation for $2,500 - they just don't have the resources for that And that's what the scammers/thieves rely on.

If you're selling online again, should probably either use something like Paypal, or else not ship/release the item until the payment clears - your bank should be able to tell you how long that is.

A lawyer wouldn't be of much use to you here - what would you be asking them to do? The guy that owes you is the guy that took your engine and didn't pay you, and I assume you can't find him. IAt least the lawyers you've contacted are being honest, and not running up even more of a bill "investigating".

Sorry this happened to you.

Are you serious? The bible is God's word or whatever and if you're saying "well don't just read that cause it won't make sense read the scholar's writing too" then you're saying the bible won't make sense and you shouldn't have to read any scholar's writing's to understand the bible. The bible is supposed to be the words to live by and if you need to further understand it with scholars writing's then you know in your heart the bible is pure crap.

I'm afraid you've got no recourse.

My brother & his business partner lost their business up her in SD in a similar way.

The banks are no help & make it sound like it's your fault they cashed worthless paper. (Even though they're sposed to be able to spot worthless ones.) The banks get their money, no matter what.

Tell a local TV station about your situation and maybe you can get a new lead on assistance.

People are still falling for this scam? You can ask yourself why you accepted anything other than a bank certified check or cash. Other than that, you are pretty much screwed.

Wait wait..how does that go?....dee dee dee!

You know where you shipped the engine to, correct? Report the engine as stolen and give the police the details as to who you shipped it to. Essentially it was stolen.
