I found ,what I now know is a painted turtle. I saved it from being ran over. Is it a safe and good pet for my kids to have? One site said that they may be endangered, how can I find out if this one is?

They're fine pets. Just be sure to clean their tanks. Also wash your hands after handling them as handling reptiles has been linked to salmonella. Painted turtles aren't endangered and are actually sold in many pet shops so you should have no problems getting food there.

The Painted Turtle has the broadest range of any species of turtle in North America. The Painted Turtle can be found throughout Mexico, the United States and Canada. There are four subspecies of Painted Turtle. The Eastern Painted Turtle subspecies is found throughout the Northeastern United States and is very common in Nova Scotia and Canada. They can be found as far south as Georgia and Alabama..As far as being endangered, not really...

They are awesome pets, I have one and my niece loves it...They are easy to handle and very docile...Just make sure your little one washes her hands after, b/c reptiles and amphibians can carry salminila....

Painteds are not endangered in most of their territory, but can be locally threatened, and reptiles in general are not doing super well lately.

They make good pets, but it takes a lot of work to get the tank set up and running. There is a mild risk of Salmonella, but decent handwashing takes care of that.

I strongly suggest keeping it for a few days, then releasing it back where you found it.

Should you decide to keep it, try these sites:

Turtles are very safe, that shouldn't be a problem. No painted turtle in America is endangered so you don't have to worry about that. They just tend to poop a lot.

Wash the turtle and it should be okay. I seriously doubt its an endangered species.
