Other than the obvious (dropping on your head, electrocuting you, going nuts and freezing everybody in the house), the main health hazard from AC comes from the condition of the air it recirculates into your house. Whether you have it set to internal air only, or to to mix in air from the outside, it can spread into the air (and keep moving around) particles that would otherwise gather as dust, which you would hopefully at least on occasion, clean up. Some of these particles can affect you as allergens, and others can overwhelm your mucous membranes if the particulate density becomes too great.
Either situation can be remedied by installation, cleaning and replacement of filters. Wall unit filters tend to be the flimsiest, and so need the most frequent cleaning. Central air units tend to have the best filters that last the longest, but which should still be replaced at least every few months, and especially right before and after summer.
Vacuuming the ducts can also help in the case of Central Air. Stuff can get in there naturally and then get blown around.

A cold has nothing to do with temperature -- it is a virus. Yes you can get sick from air conditioning, many people died from Legionaires disease.
Clean your filter with an eco-friendly anti-bacterial/virus killing cleaner (I know a great one) on a regular basis. Don't use bleach because it degrades the filter and is a known carcenogen as are MOST cleaners you can buy in the grocery store and you will be blowing toxins throughout your home. Go to concerned moms . com and arm yourself with knowlege. E-mail me if you want more info. about cheap eco-friendly products that you can use, make money using, and make money telling others about.

If you do not clean the filter in your air conditioner, it can trap allergens and cause you to feel sick, like sneezing, coughing, runny or stuffy nose, etc.
I do not believe it can actually cause you to catch a cold, however, and I do not think it is a health hazard unless it falls on your head.

I sure hope not b/c I run the hell out of my AC and have all my life! The entire country is screwed if there were health issues and don' t you think everyone would be walking around sick all day everyday of the summer season? That is like saying heat to keep you warm makes you sick. You need to move to a climate that never changes.
