Do you prefer to install an IM client such as Yahoo. MSN or just use a normal chatroom in a HTML page or an applet?

I need to know before deciding to implement a( server-client) IM in http://www.skillipedia.com
Thanks for your time.

When I don't have admin/root privileges to install chat clients, I go for web-based IMs such as Meebo and e-buddy.

A standalone app is best for me... but there are some chatrooms that work well too. It does mean having to stay on that page, however, whereas with a standalone you can be surfing other pages, doing othr stuff (even using non HTML 'offline' progs like OpenOffice, Excel or Far cry and still get your messages - so long as you are still online yourself... in a broadband world, almost all is possible).

Personally I use Yahoo - I find MSM too full of kids with silly long names that they've culled from the latest pop lyrics.

Trillian (named after a character from Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy) is actually quite good and allows you to access several different logins from the one programme (Yahoo, MSM, Aim, Jabber etc).

On my mobile phone I use ~Agile Messenger, which does a similar job to Trillian.

NOt sure if this is the right answer your'e looking for but i have never used a chat room...wouldnt know how to get into one anyway...but have both Yahoo and MSN and prefer MSN out of the two....besides most of my friends are on that one. good luck with your decision.

I prefer chat rooms but then find everyone instantly wants to know your IM address because its "faster".

I prefer the anonymity of a chat room if talking to people you don't know but yahoo/msn for my friends

Trillian as a standalone

and/or

Ebuddy as a web-based client works well

I prefer the standalone application to be installed, that way I don't have to keep a browser window open all the time to be able to send IMs.
