They can harvest the cord blood that will contain a lot of stem cells. I don't think that it is automatically done after every birth. After my daughter's birth the doctor asked do we need any cord blood? They said yes, and I guess they took it. After that it is probably just medical waste. As a parent you can choose to bank the cord blood yourself, but that's expensive and has yearly fees...but it's available for your family if some disease that can benefit from it is diagnosed.

The cord is clamped then cut. The UC along with the placenta are placed in a biohazard bag and are picked up by medical waste, and supposedly brought to the dump. I don't know how much I believe that last part b/c of where I worked we always separated the UC/placenta from other medical waste...makes you wonder where they are really being sent.

It is usually severed at birth and then tied shut at the baby's end to keep it from leaking. Within the next week or two it dries up and is removed, leaving a belly button.

Many things...but one interesting thing they do with it is trade it with medical firms that wrap it in a dacron fiber and make bio-grafts used to replace arteries. I say they trade it because hospitals can not sell body parts so they will trade the cords for coupons for things like coffee makers etc.
