I'm thinking about planting a Crape Mytle in my front yard, maybe two. I have never had Crape Myrtles and need to know about their root system. Is it deep or does it spread wide? I need to know in order to pick the right planting spot to protect the walls and foundation of my house and the water line running through the middle of my yard.

Lagerstromia indica, Crepe Myrtle, have a root system that is more moderate to deep than shallow. They do not have a particularly agressive root system so there should be no problems with them causing problems that you listed as concerns.

crepe myrtles are a great medium sized tree for any garden the Flemmings 'indian summer' series. As rule never plant any tree close to a house, plant on the fence line maybe or few feet away. Crepe myrtles dont have evasive roots.

Crepemyrtles should not be a problem anywhere in your yard. They are a very tough and resiliant plant. Thier root system is relatively moderate at depth but is not strong enough to cause any structural damage to your foundation. Check your zone of planting. Crepemyrtles in the south can get very big. In Texas, crepemyrtles can get just as large as any typical shade tree. Be sure you give them room to grow or they will be under your eaves and gutters in no time. They can be trimmed to contain them in a small space, but they do best when left to grow with regular maintenance pruning in the late winter to very early spring.

They have shallow roots that arent real deep. They only spread out as far as the tree is wide. Just don't plant a weeping one.

We had one planted within two feet of two sidewalks. The roots were never a problem. We currently have one right next to our drive way and parking area. It has been there 10 years and has never been a problem.
