Its one of the mysteries of the universe..

I am really horrified at some of the answers that people are posting here. Just because a person is slightly overweight it doesn't mean that she is a cow or that she cannot find clothes in her size.

A lot of women wear clothes that they "burst" out of. And a lot of them are thin enough that they can wear whatever they want and they clearly don't have body image issues. I can't tell you how many skinny women I see with a fat roll coming out of their jeans because they are wearing them too low and too tight. The fact of the matter is, tight fitting clothes are in for women right now, which means that is the style even if a woman is not a size 2.

Besides, some "overweight girls" look really great in tighter clothes because they have the curves to pull them off! (Better than a skinny girl wearing those draping clothes that make them look like a clothes hanger)

I could say here that a few will have a mental picture of themselves as being slimmer.

Some feel that the clothes they wear looks right for them, again this is based on there own self perception of what they look like.

Sometimes other people give the wrong impression and would comment on how smart or well they look which is then encouraging to a overweight person to dress in the same fashions time and time again.

I personally think that honesty is the best policy and whilst I would not openly tell someone that the outfit they were wearing was significant of 'June is busting out all over', I would suggest if out shopping that is..."don't you think this would look better considering your colouring and the fact that it allows you some movement for your arms".

An increasing number of young people seem to think that the fat they have is puppy fat and that it will shift without any effort, when they themselves are in there mid twenties. GP's and nurses need to suggest that this is not so and is indeed an obese problem which could lead to health issues.

I also think clothing shops should be allowed to advertise weight loss programmes etc.Especially as not all fashion styles are available to the clinically obese.

Those few who feel Ok about being fat are conning themselves and need to look at exercise, and diet now before its to late.

When you buy clothes do they always fit perfect it maddens me when i go shopping and see a nice pair of jeans and nice tops and there is none in my size has this ever happened to you i don't think i could go and buy a size 12 top as i am really a size 16 but then some people are confident enought to do these things. have you ever been told that something you are wearing doesn't look good on you and how would you feel i say each to their own what ever you want to wear and how you feel about yourself is more important than what anyone else think. You are who you are wearing clothes or not.

Sometimes I see pics of myself and realise what I was wearing looked awful, but in the mirror at home I thought it was OK. Clothes move about on your body, so something you put on looks great at first but all goes wrong when you start walking!!! Jeans go down too low and push up a muffin top, or tops ride up and expose a belly. I find that if I pull up my jeans and pull down my top I look a completely different shape. (I just look silly re-adjusting all day!!)

Also, if it is recent weight gain and they're just wearing old clothes, it's perfectly possible that they haven't noticed the extra bulges yet. It doesn't take much and not everyone obsessed in the mirror all the time. When I was younger I could gain or lose 15 pounds without really noticing.

And the clothes industry has a lot to answer for... seems like everything is designed for women w/o curves. Hipster jeans are very difficult to get right, but you can't wear anything else without looking unfashionable. I'm a UK 12 (US 8) and there's a lot of clothing trends that I can't pull off at that size, although I'm not overweight the wrong clothes can make me look chubby. Girls who are actually overweight must an even worse time- they don't want to dress all boring w/o personality, but cute trendy clothes are not designed to flatter them.

I think we should cut them some slack.

I think that some heavier girls wear tight clothing because they have an unhealthy body image. Also alot of heavier girls hang out with smaller ones who just aren't honest when the large friend ask them how an outfit makes them look. I myself am a curvy female but I know how to accentuate my positives and minimize my negatives. I also follow a few simple rules: 1. Just because it comes in my size does not mean that I can wear it. 2. Just because that halter top looks good on my best friend (size 3), doesn't mean it will look the same on me.

Because they have self confidence and don't care what other people think of it. I've seen overweight women and smaller women wear clothes like that. Just because someone's smaller does not mean that the clothes look good on them. It doesn't matter what size a person (man or woman) is, they should wear what they're comfortable in. If you've got it - flaunt it!

It's a real shame. It's not that they are overweight (some only slightly) - it's that they don't dress appropriatly for their size - which many people do but with them it is more noticeable.

I know and see many women who aren't your classic 10 but always dress lovely. They then shine with confidence - it's this that some people lack when they wear tight clothes.

look at the number of Girls that have answered.

I think it is because they buy clothes at the size they would like to be and then force them on. I am concerned that they dont seem to realise they look like a trifle shoved into a small polythene bag. But lets be honest even a size 8 bird wouldnt be seen dead in flesh coloured lycra joggers

And why are they always waiting at bus stops when you see them

Can you imagine when they get dressed in the morning, saying to their partner "what do you think?"
Does my bum look big in this?

Hang on love I need to stand back a bit to get the full picture

The alternative might be that they want to look like the sausages they eat
Sorry overweight girls, love you really but come on ...I am a desperate man but there are Limits ( you wont have heard of them they are slimming biscuits)

I wonder that myself.

It only emphasizes their body's bad points, it doesn't hide them or make the girls look smaller. Most of the time it makes them look heavier because their excess flesh is pushed out in all directions.

They could wear the same style in a size or two bigger and I think it would look ten times better.

It could be one of several reasons. It could be that they have gained the extra weight recently and they are wearing an older outfit.

Or it could be that they think a size 14 sounds too big so they buy a 12 instead.

Or it could be that they buy and outfit with the intention of loosing weight soon.
