My girlfriends laptop's hard drive keeps spinning and we get error, other solutions had said we might be able to buy some time to back things up if we use chkdsk... the only problem is that it doesn't goto a prompt in which I can type it in. I tried some of the software discs including the windows xp one and no dice so far. Is there any way to get to prompt with a program or boot disc ? thanks

You need to configure your system to boot from cd and insert the boot or restore disc. Dont know what you have for a laptop but usually pressing the escape key continually during bootup will open your bios settings. If this doesnt work you can find out how by visiting the mfg website. Make sure that your bios is set to boot from cd on the first boot device! You may then reboot with the restore or boot cd in the drive. Good luck!

Go to start menu, and click on run

type cmd on run dialog and press enter

When the command screen appears type chkdsk on the command prompt and press enter. this will activate the chkdisk on XP

I hope that this helps.
