i know the cord is the belly button. i wasn't exactly sure what it attached to INSIDE the baby.

One end of the umbilical cord is attached to the placenta which is attached to the uterine wall. The other end of the cord is attached to the baby's stomach where the belly button will be created after it is cut. The baby has some arteries and veins that extend into the cord and mingle with arteries and veins carrying the mother's blood. There is no exchange of blood, but there is an exchange of oxygen and nutrients.

Yes, you're right. The umbilical cord is a tube which supplies
all the nutrition from mother to the baby and it is attached to
the baby's lower abdomen from one end and the other end to
the placenta in the womb of the mother.
As the baby grows in the womb, the supply of nutritional fluids
increases and it passes through the umbilical cord to the baby.
At the same time, whatever the baby discharges, like urine,
watery wastes will also pass through this cord and back to
the mother for disposal.
At the time of birth, the umbilical cord will be severed from
the baby by the doctor.Thus, it has no more need for the baby.

there is no direct connection between the mother's and baby's blood supply. Mother's intakes feed the placenta. From placenta through the umbilical cord the nutrients enter the baby's blood. After birth of the baby the placenta also comes out ( that's why it is called afterbirth by some) On the baby's body umbilical card connects to the place where it is cut off and u get the belly button.

it's attached at the belly button!
it receives from the placenta, which is what mom is fueling.
so, mom fuels the placenta, which sends nourishment to baby via umbilical cord!
