I have a Powermac G4 with a built in Airport wireless internet card.

My roomate has a Dell laptop that sits directly next to my computer on the same desk, but he uses a Linksys plug-in wireless card that sticks out of the side of his computer.

We have free internet in my apartment building. I get full signal almost all of the time. He has 1 bar all the time or no connection at all sometimes.

Why? Is it because Applle is better than PC? haha

Actually its probably because he has a cheap wireless card.. or perhaps its one of those sucky D-Link cards.

No, it is because wireless cards don't work as well as built in wi-fi and hotspot connections. He can goto a computer place and have one installed into his laptop and it will work better. I used to use the linksys card, and it sucked, now I use a dell inspiron w/ built in, and it is 100% all the time, and I can pick up signals a few blocks away from me.

Brand of wireless card makes a difference

If there is an object (even the laptop itself) blocking the signal, you will get poor reception.

Could it be the card is defective?

I have a Dell with a Ornico card, and I can get wireless anywhere in my house and out partly into my yard.

Try an Orinoco or a Netgear card. Get their basic "B/G" card and you will be fine.
