It's a possibility but in reality, one or the other will start having feelings, whether or not they say so.

I have been mates with lots of males inside my 61 year life... but, sadly, I've also had to end, or at the least, slow down, most of those friendships, even at the age I'm at... because the male usually intimates an emotional interest in me, and even when they don't make a full blown pass, they start to make you feel uncomfortable around them.
You end up wounding feelings, thinking fast how you can turn them down without losing friendship... all because you took the 'friendship' word quite seriously and never thought to bypass it for more, while they grew ever fonder and turned from friendship thoughts to love!
I am old enough to know that once you cross the line in friendship... however briefly, the friendship cannot last at all when love begins to die!

Yes they can. I have several male friendships (no sex ever!) that have lasted over 30 years and counting! We are best friends, they are like brothers to me.
And no, I am not a lesbian (for those of you that automatically go that route because you lack the understanding of relationship with the opposite sex "can" be just that - friends)

It's tough. One of my best friends is a girl, but she's a lesbian and it really does keep the friendship on an even keel. With all of my other female friends some kind of weirdness eventually develops, especially if it's a meaningful intimate friendship. Damn shame.

Women's view - Yes - but there is always something there in the back of your mind. Kinda like a backup. I have 3 really good guy friends and I have been married for 13 years. I even went out of town by myself to hang out with one of them. My husband isn't friends with them either.

Of course, but it's always best to clarify things from the outset so neither individual begins to entertain any false expectations.

yes very much so there are lots of people you might pass every day who are in a friendship of deep affection and sex doesn't motivate their lives

Only if you're both willing to flirt with each other endlessly without expecting anything to ever happen.
