The main hurdle for a GL movie to overcome is that it's going to be EXPENSIVE to do well -- tons of CGI work, animatronics and puppetry work for aliens, huge sets, etc. A movie like that has got to put butts in the seats in DROVES to make that money back; and unfortunately, Green Lantern simply doesn't have the name recognition that Batman or Spider-Man have. Hell -- even with a huge name on the marquee, it doesn't mean it's going to be successful (consider how far short of the mark the new Superman movie fell in the box office).
Plus, let's face it: a lot of the Green Lantern stuff -- the giant glowing green hands and boxing gloves and stuff -- is kinda cartoony, and it needs to appeal to a little more adult crowd. I seem to recall at one point there was talk of making a Green Lantern movie that was going to be a "wacky comedy", with Jack Black as everyone's favorite ring-slinger....but nobody's going to spend that much money on a goofball movie like that....
Now if you ask me, Green Lantern would be IDEAL for a new Animated Series -- where the budgetary concerns are much less, and where the ring's energy constructs won't look too goofy. The GLC already had some guest appearances in the Justice League cartoons; maybe somebody needs to start a grass-roots campaign to get "GLC: The Animated Series" off the ground....

It would be great if DC were to do as you suggest, but, as others have stated here, Batman is a priority (the next movie is tentatively called The Dark Knight-check comics2film for this verification), Superman, is of course another, and we do have Wonder Woman certified as another DC character being brought to film, and then The Flash. Green Lantern is not as recognizable to non-fans as all the others I just mentioned, HOWEVER, I do think the time to make a Green Lantern movie isn't too far down the road, given the fantastic special effects and Sci-Fi storyline that COULD appeal to both fans and non-fans alike. I am just going to echo some of the sentiments here and say a GL movie probably won't be produced as soon as others, but we can still hope! Just to pipe in my order of heroes, Batman is my fave non-super powered hero, but Green Lantern is my fave Superhero before Superman. Also to comment what Soleil Noir said about Jack Black being a possibility as GL, I'd vomit in my hat and wear it before I'd see a movie like that, and he is right, it was going to be a "goofy" type of movie. Hopefully someone in Hollywood will realize that Superheroes ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE CAMPY!! Great question; been a lot of talk about Green Lantern lately!

It is my understanding that all the major characters in the DC and Marvel universes have been optioned for movies and television projects. I always felt the technology wasn't right to effectively and convincingly render the constructs the Green Lanterns make from their power rights. Now, with computer generated imagery being so go, the time just might be right for a GL movie.

Movies get shelved for many reasons. It could have nothing to do with how popular GL is. I do agree he would make great film but so many factors go into making a film. It may have been pushed back for other projects. Example originally the upcoming film starring Nick Cage "Ghost Rider" should have been out but production was pushed back due to Cage's schedule and other projects they (film makers) wanted to do first. Look at upcoming movie websites and you may find info on GL film progress

It may have been shelved due to the fact that priliminary effects tests proved too CRAPPY. They looked horible, but in light of recent developments (comics becoming money making movies) DC is planning to dish out the cash necessary to pay for the green lantern effects.
BUt they are too busy working on Batman: Enter the Joker, and Superman (Rumored to be a three film deal: THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN)

Because it would make a HORRIBLE film.
Movies are about PEOPLE...look at why Marvel is using it's lesser characters: b/c the story is about a person, not their powers. (Of course, when you have stupid characters like Elektra and Punisher, you're going to have a stupid movie about people.)
I like Hal Jordan, but the ring, and the goofy things that writers/artists have done w/ it, overshadow the person.
It would be a huge bust.
As for popularity, I think you are forgetting WW and the Flash.

specific. It became cool for comedian e book nerds and noobies alike. I observed it with my nephew (age 8) and a pair of nieces (8 & 11). all human beings enjoyed it, even the adults. that's nowhere close to as dark as Batman, yet is actual equivalent to Thor this summer time. i think of X-adult males has been the final superhero action picture as a effect far, yet like maximum folk, i'm fairly looking forward to Capt. united statesa.. like each of those movies, they might desire to get interior the process the beginning tale earlier making the actual blockbuster (ie. Spiderman 2). the final aspects take place in area, yet once you realize what you're going into, you will possibly desire to have a solid time. super 8... overvalued. A mishmash of Goonies, ET and close Encounters. playstation : Blake energetic, is a naughty hottie.

I'd agree with you, but obviously the people at DC and the movie studio do not. Maybe they just have budget and time restrictions. Keep on hoping. Keep on watching. Keep on shedding your light on dark evil, because evil things cannot stand the light!
