This is my 2nd pregnancy....I am 36 weeks along and have been having irregular contractions that might I add are quite painful. I did not go into labor on my own with my first and therefore I feel as though I am completely blind to what I should be experiencing in TRUE labor.

Someone please help.....I feel soooooo lost!

For those of you who might think that I am asking if I am in labor that is not it. I have already seen the doctor 2 x's this week about it.
I am just asking how close contractions should be before I go back out to the hospital again....
I know what contractions feel like, I just don't know how intense I should let them get .....

I understand what you're going through. I had lots of "false labor" during later pregnancy with my 2nd and 3rd babies. I had contractions 5 minutes apart, lasting 45 seconds, and that kept up for 2-3 hours, just long enough for me to call my hubby home from work, get to the hospital, and then they quit.

That being said, when true labor started there was NO doubt that was "it."

The contractions will be strong, and will get progressively stronger. They will not stop if you lie down, or if you are lying down when they start they won't stop when you get up and walk around. They won't stop if you take a nice big drink of water or have a snack (sometimes being hungry or thirsty can trigger a few contractions).

The contractions will be more "intense" than the pre-labor contractions, and will feel better if you take deep breaths and make a conscious effort to relax during them. If you experience a contraction that is so strong you cannot talk during it, but have to stop what you are doing and breathe, that's a good indicator.

If you start experiencing "bloody show" during contractions (spotting from tiny blood vessels on the cervix rupturing as the cervix dilates) that is also an indicator that the contractions are changing your cervix, and are "true labor" contractions.

Try not to get too discouraged by all this pre-labor stuff. It is like your body warming up before a marathon. Every contraction you have now is moving you a little bit closer, and is helping get you closer to meeting your baby!

Best wishes to you for an easy labor and a very healthy baby.

Even though you didn't go into labour on your own the last time, You did go through labour I am assuming. Your contractions should be very similar to the ones you had last time. So if they feel like that I suggest you call your doctor and head for the hospital.
Relax and Good Luck!!!

What your feeling now is what your going to feel till the baby comes. It sucks, and yes it does hurt.
