Computer screen has lines and the lines show up from time to timeand I think it's the video card. I have a Hewet Packard for a box and compaq for the monitor. How do I update the video card? I tried everythinf I possibly could. I went to the site and tried the possible divers and nothing works. whats going on? How do you update the video card? like a purple lines showing up on the screen. Thanks.

You have to stay away from Compaq. I consider it to be the worse brand in computer equipment. HP is in my top 5 for this category too.

If this is an LCD screen, you could try the auto-adjust, as someone suggested. If that doesn't work, then try a different screen resolution.

Otherwise, it's likely to be your video card if the above doesn't help or if it's a CRT (regular) monitor. In that case, try a new video card.

Check the connection make sure it's secure.

Could also be the monitor.

You don't describe the lines. That can be important.

For example, white lines that go from left to right at an angle could indicate a component in the monitor is dying.

If you are using an LCD monitor, press the auto adjust button and that should fix the problem. If not, it might be a problem with the video card and you should get a new one.

You can't download updates for hardware. You can only download updates for software. So, if your video card is on it's way out, there is no update download on the internet for it. That is not to say that you cannot download an updated driver but that does not update your hardware, only the software.

That said, possibly your monitor is getting ready to die?

Try these steps this may resolve the problem

(Windows XP)

Rigth-click on desktop select properties
Select Setting tab.
Click on Advance button.
Select Monitor tab.
Change the Screen refresh rate. to higer.

have you tried to restore your system to a restore point before it started having trouble...have you cleaned your computer with the disk cleaner and defragmenter....you may have to contact a computer tech...or call someone and see ...i do not know anything about your computer...i have a windows xp professional and they are good computers.....
