Turkey has a secular government, and they have no difficulty in addressing the human rights issues. The major obstacles blocking Turkey's entry are (1) Cyprus and (2) Greece.
The EU promised that it would end the embargo on Turkish Cyprus but has not done so. They are demanding that Turkey opens its ports to Greek Cyprus, which Turkey refuses to do until the embargo is lifted. The whole Cyprus question is too complex to go into here.
The problem with Greece is more easily stated. Greece and Turkey are arch-enemies. Greece had dreams of empire back in the 20s and invaded Turkey. Greece was resoundingly defeated. Neither side forgets.
Incidentally, these references to Islam are total rubbish. The founder of modern Turkey - who dragged it screaming and kicking into the 20th Century - was strongly opposed to the backwardness that the old religion imposed on his people. His principles of secular government are still adhered to today.

Turkey is a big country and very important to the west strategically and economically (for its access to oil supplies). If it came to it Turkey would survive quite well without the EU.

As soon as the EU lets it. Turkey wants in, the issues surrounding their accession to the EU include some European countries' worries about a wave of Muslim immigrants and also about Turkey's human rights record. But there is an ongoing dialogue about improving both Turkey's economy and government before accession.

There are a million things to be sorted out before they can join the eu. The human rights issue for starters, although i like Turkey and it,s culture, things have to be thought out before they can become members, europe could be flooded with even more problems otherwise. Good luck to them anyways, better to have them as friends than otherwise eh. I am a British subject, and no racist.or discriminater of other cultures. But common sense must come first.

Don't worry, the French will never allow it. Rest assured Turkey will never be part of the EU.

I would be surprised if Turkey ever joined considering the opposition to it from both France and Germany but in the unlikely instance they did join it wouldnt be until atleast 2020.

Wouldn't you? Its not like Turkey is some great world power. It needs the support of the EU.

This better not be an anit Islam question either.

Unlikely to ever happen. The official line is not before 2015, and only if they adopt European law and convince the French not to block it. The reality is never.
