You should start with rice cereal first then work up to other kinds, oatmeal, etc. But don't rush it. It may take a while for your baby to really get the hang of eating cereal, especially from a spoon. I would start between 3 & 4 months with rice cereal. You should talk to your pediatrician and see what she says. If your baby doesn't seem satisfied she might tell you it's OK to start with rice cereal now. Good luck.

Okay, your daughter isn't quite ready for oatmeal or ANY cereal. She will be ready for rice cereal around 4-6 months and when you begin feeding her that, you mix 1 teaspoon with breastmilk or formula until it is very soupy. Give it to her once a day. Try that for about 2 weeks or so and if she does well you can give her up to 1 tablespoon a day. About 2-3 weeks after that you can begin her on oatmeal

Wait till around 4 months but start on rice cereal. I started my son on rice cereal at 4months and I just introduced oat cereal and it doesn't agree with his stomach. He has lots of gas and spits up all the time. I will be going back to the rice cereal. I think it's easier to digest.
P.S Don't listen to the people that tell you to wait till 6 months to start it. You are the mother and know what's best. If you feel it's right for your little one than start it but I think 2 months is a little too early to be honest. 4 months is a good time to start because there swollowing is much better. Good luck.

4-6 months, after she has tried rice cereal. Watch your baby and look for clues that she is ready, she opens her mouth and seems interested when you eat, botles just don't seem to satisfy. It is important to wait because solid foods dont have the nutrients found in breastmilk and formula, so you don't want your baby filling up on cereal and then not getting enough milk. Also a baby should be able to push the food to the back of the mouth with their tongue, it is very different than sucking.

You should wait until at least 6 months. Feeding a baby cereal earlier than that can lead to all sorts of problems, including allergies, digestive problems and potential choking, as a baby's gag reflex is very strong before 6 months. Check http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/babys-first-foods.html for information about introducing solids safely.

Here's what my doctor said for my baby, she's 8 months now. Babies can start rice cereal at 4-6 months of age. It depends if their extrusion reflex (allows only liquid to be swallowed) has stopped. You can tell when that is when she stops spiting out cereal. Get her eating rice (it's gentle on her little stomach) and then go to oatmeal about a month or two later. Two months is way too young for anything besides milk or formula. Wait a few months and then try. And ask your doctor.
And you're not supposed to put it in a bottle. The point of starting solids is for her to be able to eat solid foods, not drink them.

You dont even start rice cereal until 4 months....3 months at the earliest. Slow down and enjoy your baby. Jeepers....is she even sleeping through the night yet? And if not, is this the reason you want to start her on solid foods, because you're eager for a full night sleep? Slow down. Think about your baby, she's not ready to injest solid foods yet.
