I have been at my job for 1 1/2 yrs and the only time I take off is when my daughter is sick or when I have to go to court with her father. My boss automatically uses my vacation days for these off days. The problem is, is that every time I have ever mentioned I need a day she gets like,"this is your last time." Well I don't do it very often at all- but now I need to go to court one more time this month and then I want to also tell her that I need off a week to go to Florida. It just sucks because she has used all my vacation days and now I am a little freaked to say something, but I have to! Any suggestions?

at my job, vacation days are "paid leaves of absence"... so if its the same for you, you could just take the day off, without pay...

All I can say is that you can attempt to explain your situation to your boss but more than likely you will probably have to deal with whatever comes. Unfortunately you will probably have to forget about Florida if you want to keep your job.

As an employer I can tell you that my job becomes harder every time an employee decides to take the day off. If an employee does not come to work, I lose money. I set aside vacation and personal days for my employees so that I can budget it accordingly. And when an employee has to take more days off, I end up having to terminate them.

Do you have any sick days saved up? Maybe you could use those. Or agree to take some of the time unpaid.

Normally, days off with pay are "vacation" days. So as one person mentioned you may have to bite the bullet and take days off without pay. Where I work, they just recently changed our sick time definition to include time off to care for sick family members, otherwise that used to be charged to vacation.

Check with your HR department or employee handbook for your days off policies.

well she does not sound like a very understanding boss...i think if you have worked their that long that she would know and understand you better...and know that you do have things you have to do....i guess i would just tell her and if things do not go well .....then you may need to look for a different job....i think though she should be more understanding...she does have a life outside of work to doesn't she....

Get another job. If you have family, you need a more flexible job with a more understanding boss.

Call your local labor department. I don't think she can use your vacation days unless you specify you want them used. As long as you give her proper notice you should be able to get the days off.
