I tend to manufacture my emotions based upon what I think I'm expected to feel. For example, I recently ended a relationship and I thought I should feel badly about it, so I tried to make myself cry. I couldn't do it. My mind wandered and I began thinking about what I should wear the next day. Is this really abnormal?

Wow... I didn't expect this kind of response. Thank you all for your input. Even those answers that said it was a sign of immaturity. I wanted honest answers, and you gave me an honest opinion. Thanks again! I feel much better!

Honey your emotions are your emotions. You can't try to feel something that is not there. So I think you should work on just being you, and no one else.
Be happy. Enjoy life. Don't worry about what others are expecting you to do or to feel.
God Bless..

i dont think it is abnormal,if you have no feelings toward anything that is when you should worry and maybe seek a therapist, but not being upset about a break up isn't the end of the world, stop worrying about how you think people will see you as a person and how they may judge you, there is no right or wrong emotion in a situation, some people just have stronger reactions to certain situations than others....

No-you are not abnormal. Take this experience as a lesson-no one can really tell you how you should be feeling, although many will have an opinion as to how they think you should react to a situation. Our feelings are based on our perceptions and previous experiences and there is no way you can make yourself feel something that you don't want to.

Please don't manufacture expected emotions unless it's for the good of you. It's normal to feel bad to end the relationship but it's okay not to cry over it. You could have assessed your thoughts & feelings before you actually end the relationship. When you end it, you ended it calmly (& maturely), I would say. Either that, or you were not that serious in him / in the relationship. It's good to get over sad / bad things fast. So, need not worry too much.

Why is this a sign of immaturity? You can't force yourself to feel something you don't. In the grand scheme of things, a break up really is not a big deal. Forced emotions just make you look fake anyway.

It's not abnormal at all. The only reason you felt you should cry is because that's what happens in all the movies and stuff. You have to be your own person, and feel whatever it is you feel.

LOL. No, girl, it just sounds like you want to experience life on your own terms. You want to know what it's like to experience every emotion at the appropriate time.
Maybe you are practicing to become an actress or something.

Stop MANUFACTURING your emotions based on what other people tell you, or they say you should feel.

If your not bothered then he wasn't worth it.
When you break up with someone special you feel it.

LOL

I think you may just be delaying your feelings. And maybe ending things was the right thing to do and you knew it.
