In most states, you actually have to have a law degree. It does not necvessarily have to be a graduate degree. I know someone who studied law in England -- where law is an undergraduate degree. She was allowed to practice law in New York by passing the bar exam.

Not every state requires lawyers to have a law degree. Some states allow people to "read law" by becoming an apprentice at a law firm. No law degree is needed to become a lawyer in California, Virginia, Maine, Colorado or Vermont. California is famous for having the toughest bar exam in the country.
