Hemi (from "hemisphere") or "crossflow cylinder head" is a design of internal-combustion engines in which the cylinder head's combustion chamber is of hemispherical form. The term, "Hemi engine" is a trademark of Chrysler Corporation, though the concept is used by many manufacturers.

Those dumb bastards make such a big deal about it, but in all actuality many other manufacturers have come out withe hemi motors. The poorest example, the dohc honda vtec motors had it, and my old Taurus SHO motor had it. Why would they try and make a big deal about it, because stupid people will buy into the commercials, and say wow it's got a hemi, it must be good. Dodge is going down hill fast.

After reading the replies it proves my point how many stupid people there are, that will say woowowow it's got a hemi, what a joke. Than proceed to go buy one.

Hemi (from "hemisphere") or "crossflow cylinder head" is a design of internal-combustion engines in which the cylinder head's combustion chamber is of hemispherical form. The term, "Hemi engine", is a trademark of Chrysler Corporation, though the concept is used by many manufacturers.

The BMW double push rod design, taken over by Bristol Cars, the Peugeot 403 and the Toyota T engine are other well known examples. Harry Arminius Miller racing engines were more notable example. Stutz had built four valve engines, resembling modern car engines. Chrysler's main innovation was to build them in such large numbers.

The hemispherical combustion chamber design puts the intake/exhaust valves in-line, rather than side-by-side, allowing for better flow of air through the head (although the inlet and exhaust valves are not simultaneously open and there is no continuous flow). The spark plug in the center of the chamber makes for better ignition of the fuel/air mixture. These aspects help make the hemi-type engine more efficient and powerful, and less prone to engine knock.

A hemi, as used by Daimler-Chrysler, refers to a V8 automotive engine with hemi-spherical combustion chambers reminiscent of an famous engine from the muscle car era in the 60's.
The hemi design allows for greater compression and more efficient compression but the significance in passenger car use is pretty small. It is easier and cheaper to make internal combustion engines with flat-topped combustion chambers using a simpler cylinder head, a very expensive part.
From a marketing point of view the current hemi engine and it's promotion is very clever.

If you like cars, then you have probably heard of the HEMI engine. If you were born in the 1960s or before, you remember the phenomenon created by Chrysler's HEMI engines in the 1950s, '60s and '70s. If you follow muscle cars or drag racing, you know that the 426 HEMI engine is a popular engine because of its performance. You've probably also heard of the HEMI engines that Chrysler began using in 2003 Dodge trucks.

the new 5.7 is crap. the old 426 was good but even the tests Dodge did in the 60s said the 440 magnum would kick the hemi's butt in the quarter mile and top speed. the hemi is basically a hyped up motor that sold as a more expensive option for dodge in the 60s and 70s and again now.

The HEMI (don't know what the acronym stands for) is a racing engine that was originally developed in the late 1960's by the Chrysler Corporation. The original HEMI was a 427-cubic-inch (approximately 6.5 liter) monster. It's notorious for high horsepower, which will give you a higher top speed, and high torque, which will give you better acceleration off the line. They have been used in sports cars, larger pick-up trucks, and police cruisers (the ones they have used in police cruisers have been modified for more horsepower and torque, so they have an edge when trying to catch the bad guys).

Hemi is a term used to describe the shape of the combustion chamber, it is hemispherical in shape, with the spark plug in the center, thus a hemi.

A "hemi" is what sets some of the higher end Dodge vehicles apart. It gives them more power. It makes them go faster. It puts some horses under their hood. Everytime I pull up beside a Dodge Ram, I find myself wanting to say, "Does that thing have a hemi?"
