I am a thirty one year old designer. I'm out of shape and have never been in an airplane. Now suppose I wanted to become an astronaut. How would I get from this point in life to that point?

I'm sorry to inform you that NASA does not train , or even accept anyone older than 30 into it's astronaut training program. (Unless you are already a NASA employee and have extensive flight training.) Although..... If you want to (hitch a ride) on a space shuttle mission, well that's a different story. NASA will soon be accepting applicants for a seat on future shuttle missions IF you have a LOT of money. Russia is even more willing to accept applicants for a seat on their missions, and as I understand it, are more available than NASA's.
I believe the day will come when anyone of means will be able to travel into space. But as far as becoming a bonified "Astronaut", I'm sorry to say that your age discounts you as a candidate if you are a civilian.
Hopefully in the near future, a private enterprise will develop a different criteria for the average Joe, (who has the dough) to train, and become a real "Astronaut"

Dude you'll be competing against buff 25 year olds w/ perfect vision and health. They probably have flight experience - military or private. My buddy thought he would be a fighter pilot and at age 30 - in great shape - still had rough competition.
