i came across thsi word in a romantic story, andthe diky told me that it means love bites.
i didnt really get it.
what causesit, and wat does it look like?

It is from someone sucking on your neck or other part of your body. The sucking brings the blood to the surface of your skin and makes a purple color mark on you.
And then as it is getting better, it looks like a bruise.
People make more out of hickeys then they should. Most of the time (especially with teenagers) they are using hickeys as a way to mark their territory, and to show everyone that you belong to them.
Most people do not use the right technique and they end up sucking on you until it hurts and it is sore.
Love bites are not suppose to hurt.......lol

Its a mark caused by kisses that involve a lot of suction. The suction pulls blood to just below the surface of the skin and it stays there for a few days (like a bruise, only not as purple/blue).
In high school, it can be viewed as a way to mark your partner. But it also alerts parents to the fact that something is going on that might warrant their supervision.
You don't see it so much after high school - people are more discreet.

It is someone sucking on a part of your body until they draw blood into the tissue from the underlying capillaries resulting in a reddish somewhat circular area that fades similarly to a bruise.
The most common location is the neck, shoulders, or breasts.

it's when your partner sucks really hard (or long) on an area on your skin and the area's blood vessels get broken leaving a hideous red mark.
