If you are home I would say around 110 to 120. When you go on vacation I would turn it down to the Vacation setting or warm. 60 to 80.

Thank you for not calling it a HOT water heater.

The first answer is a good clue. Water is hot enough to shower in, or clean with in a mid range setting. Consider that our bodt temp is 98.6 and water, even at that temp feels warm to the touch. Certainly the dial on most water heaters may be able to get water near a boiling point, but I can't imagine that being what anyone would want.

I don't know off hand what temps are at the lowest setting, and in my case, I just turn off the breaker when I'm away for extended periods. The suggestion to turn the dial down to the lowest temp might be more efficient, and effective.

A big factor is personal preference, but don't go over 135. The factory setting is about 120, but some people complain that they run out of hot water too quickly at that setting. Also, the water loses some heat before it gets to the fixture. If you have kids, keep it lower.

I used to believe that keeping it set low was an energy saver. A plumber friend of mine said to turn it up and I would use less hot water....He was right..You have to use enough cold to get the pressure you want and if the "hot" is too low you keep turning it up so I now have mine set on high and we never run out..

120 is the lowest setting on our water heater...that works well for us...and considering water heating is the third largest energy expense in a home... its wise to keep the setting as low as possible...

popular question, too bad most water heaters thermostat just shows Low, Medium and High instead of a useful number.

The standard is 120 degrees, which corresponds to Low.

I don't believe the temperature can be set to anything less than Low. Anything higher wastes energy.
