Over the counter medications must be identified by batch number and have a clearly posted expiration date. Prescriptions are required only to have an expiration date, but the pharmacist has records that show manufacture date and batch number. Each tablet does not have to be scored so that it can be broken into smaller pieces. You can purchase a pill splitter that will cut the pills in half.

Well, personally speaking, being an sophomore pharmacy student, it is generally a rule, in which is why the rule was made because it should be that way.

It's for everyone's convinience really.

But about the finer details, I'm not too sure, still being a sophomore and all, but I hope this helps n_n

expiration dates are a standard by the FDA...but there is no evidence that medicine breaks down over time or becomes toxic after expiration..expiration dates by pharmacetuical companies is usually set as the point in time that they stop their study on that perticular drug...if they study it for 5 years, they set the expiration at 5 years....that is the point of time that they know for certain that the drug is effective.
