When i go to properties, then desktop, I can only change the background COLOR. It does not let me choose a new background at all. When i try to add a pic from My Pictures to the background, nothing happens. Does anyone have advice please?

Right click your desktop and go to properties and click desktop tab and click on the customise desktop button.

In the desktop items dialog box select the web tab and see whether any other webpages are listed other than My default page. if it is there remove the same and see whether you are able to change the desktop background or not.

Hmmm... sounds like you have your desktop linked to a file or something.... Do this right click on your desktop, select properties, click on the desktop tab. Select customize desktop, then click on the web tab. .... uncheck anything listed there....
