Cardboard paper towel rolls are okay for gerbils to chew. They chew it to help keep their teeth down as the teeth grow all their lives. I apologize as I am not familiar with the cages you speak of, but it is usually not a good idea to put two male hamsters together because sometimes they will fight over territory. On that note, just keep a close eye on them. A good idea is a good size aquarium, 10 gallons or larger, and some pet stores carry tops that you can attach to the top of the aquarium that you can attach the Habitrails to.

When I owned gerbils 20 plus years ago mine use to chew on paper towel tubes. But now I honestly don't know how good it would be for them now. A lot of those tubes are made from post recycled paper. You really don't know what kind of stuff might be in it still. Sure it might not be eating it. But look at chewing tobacco... People don't eat that but still get lip cancer.

As for the Critter Trail cages, I think they look cool but I just don't know about cleaning all of those bends in the elbows. If I had to do it again I probable would go with another 10-30 gallon aquarium. Plenty of room and only one area to clean. You figure a gerbil isn't going to go to the bathroom in some special place. It's going to go when it feels like. Maybe that time will be in one of the Critter Trail elbows or tubes.

Those cages are fine- for SMALL rodents. Normal sized gerbils should have a bigger home. If the two hamsters are Syrians, they can not be housed together. If they are small dwarves, then that cage is fine.

Tubes from toilet paper or paper towel are fine for them to chew on. It is not toxic for them.

Instead of getting a Critter Trail 2 for 2 gerbils, I'd consider getting 2 CT1's, and hooking them together with tubes. That will give them more room than a CT2 will.

My hamster loves to chew on those paper towel rolls, she's never had any problems. If your hamsters are eating it, it won't be toxic, but it could cause a blockage in their digestive system, so be careful. I don't know what kind of hamsters you have, but if they are syrian(more common), and not the dwarf or siberian hamsters, they prefer to be alone, so if you see any agression or fighting, you need to separate them. As for cages, bigger is better, make the cage as large as you can. Remember, your hamsters will spend their lives in these cages, so make sure they have as much space as possible.

I'm not familiar with the cages, but as far as the cardboard... absolutely. It does them no harm. They make little nests with what they've chewed and it keeps them amused for hours. Just beware of colored stuff like cereal boxes because you can never be sure of what went into the ink.
