i think its totally wrong.

In most piercing places, your not usually allowed to get a piercing if under 16 without parental permisson... so why should a baby have its ears pierced if its parents want it done? they shouldn't able able to abuse there childs body, before there even old enough to speak for themselves... its a personal decison that the child should be able to make once there old enough to do so... its wrong and i see it as abuse.. plus its tacky and common

Not Child Abuse as such - I think that it is like Circumcision - If a parent decides to do something to a child that will ultimately affect it for the rest of its life, that is wrong.

My sisters and I all had to wait until we were 7 years old before we were allowed to decide whether we wanted our ears pierced - my mum refused to have it done before then. We all did choose to have it done, and I stick with the choice, but my friend had her daughter's ears pierced at 6 WEEKS OLD - WRONG!!! - and then she decided to make her wear these huge gold creoles from Argos - that would like fine on a grown woman, but no a tiny baby it just looked nasty - like some form of medieval torture!

of course, it's up to the parents, but i think there should be a law that states children under 36 months should not be allowed earrings - after all, you get all those toys and games and things that say - NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 36 MONTHS DUE TO SMALL PARTS - You can NOT get any smaller parts than those on earrings!!! Surely its a choking hazard to have babies ears pierced! They're not hard to pull out - and that can cause pain and infections in the ear too - not to mention that the child will undoubtedly put everything in it's mouth!

IT IS A BAD IDEA TO HAVE BABIES' EARS PIERCED!

PS - note to Kamaliyah - It is a fact that there is NO medical research to prove that circumcision has ANY health benefits to the child - and the fact that many men feel they were deprived of part of their manhood when circumcised against their will, would surely prove you wrong!

I don't think so.

My parents got my ears pierced when I was a baby. I think it scares you more then it hurts at that instant and then you forget all about it. When I was a little older, I loved having earrings and didn't remember the whole process at all. When I was in my early teens, I wanted more my parents stopped it there though. I wasn't allowed to get more until I was old enough to pay for it myself. If I hadn't wanted the earrings, I could have always taken them out and let the holes close up.

I say, to each his own. If you want to pierce your babies ears, go right ahead! I see absolutely nothing wrong with it and my baby girls will get their ears pierced too.

People are always going to do things that you personally don't agree with. It's like, I don't agree with parents who let their toddlers run around with a bottle when they can use a cup. Or those who let them run around with pacifiers in their mouths. But, their not my children so I don't say anything. The only thing I can do is tell myself that I will not do that with my own children.

If you don't agree with piercing babies ears, then don't do it to your child, but let others do what they will.

No. Child abuse was being 13 years of age and the only girl in the school who wasn't allowed to get her ears pierced!!

For that reason I allowed my daughter to make her own mind up. She's six and had her ears pierced a few months ago. Everybody's happy.

I wouldn't do it, but if a parent does I can't really see it as child abuse. The child can take the earring out when they get older if they like. If the parents tattooed their child I might agree with your point but I think an earring is a minor thing considering all the other problems in society.

There are all KINDS of strange things that people do to children that are culturally based, but seem very odd when viewed from the outside of that culture. In China, children used to be subjected to a board on the forehead so that it would grow "flat", which was considered desirable. Girls would wear some sort of torture device to force their feet to be shorter.
Then there is circumcision- now WHY do they need to cut off something that grows on every human male again? Huh?
In some countries in the world, little girls are subjected to "female circumcision" Here in the US, it's just fine to mutilate your own breasts with implants-
It goes on and on.

Child abuse is a bit too strong. I agree it shouldn't be done though as it is unsightly. But what can you do the parents make the decision for their own reasons cause we dont agree is no reason to label them with abusing children labels. Sorry.

I agree, it seems so very wrong and cruel (like circumcision). Yet so many of my friends had it done to their babies with the reasoning "Better to get it done and out of the way now - while they don't remember anything later." I can't really argue with that, but I still could never bring myself to do it to my own kids. I told them they can decide when they're ten.

I think that when a child is old enough to ask for their ears peirced then its ok. But peircing an infants ears is very wrong. Your taking that right away from them. It a violation. What if that child is destined to grow up and be a nun or a holy person who would of never wanted holes in their body!! Ya, i agree its wrong.
