Your love affair I assume.
Calmly explain to your parents why you care for him. Try to keep it rational, and don't loose your temper when they argue with you. Talk about how you two have similar goals, ideals, morals, likes, dislikes, sense of humor, etc... You two are compatible, and you want to try to make it work. Ask them to give the relationship a chance before they judge.
Make sure they have plenty of opportunities to meet the guy. Don't try to hide him, or keep him away from your parents. Only familiarity can help them accept him better. Plan plenty of events where you two can do things with your parents, like dinners, movies, picnics, etc...
If they don't know him that well, maybe avoid the words "love affair". It sounds like a sexual relationship. Maybe tell them that you two care for each other, like each other, or something more about feelings than a physical relationship.
Mostly, it's up to you to convey that you are serious about this guy, it's not some passing infatuation of a young girl.

Tell them that the person whom you love is as lovely as you.
He understands you and importantly your family and life style well.
Explain them how good a person he is.
Show your desparation for that guy in your words.
You should by all means tell them that your life with that person is just wonderful for you.

if ur parents r not very strict u go ahead and tell them... if u love truly go and face the situation :-) :-)
