My little man...9yrs old has this really bad habit of touching him self. I have seen men that fix it alot but @ 9 there is not alot to fix. I have ask the Dr about this and had him even go in to make sure there was not something going on...There was nothing. So is there a way or words I can say to him to get him to stop? He is a very big ball player and after every single pitch he moves himself or what ever it is you guys do. Sorry a silly question but I really think its a issue and people are looking at him. Some parents I know say hey Mom I think JJ needs to go to the bathroom...Grrrr Help!!

dear concerned mom,
i was once a child who played on several baseball teams. I can remember have to adjust the cup i was wearing by put upwards, giving the appearance that i was feeling myself. the whole problem was that my cup was too big as well as my jock strap.
Actually, it was one of the coaches who spoke with my mother and father, suggesting that they purchase smaller sized cup and jock strap. once the new equipment was bought and put to use, ithey fit snuggly and there was no longer a reason to be touching my groin.
however, if this is not the case with your son, i would suggest that you speak with his coach and ask him to broach the topic man-to-man. I'm sure, if handled gently, the problem can be corrected. It is important that your son not be told that the action is dirty, disgusting, etc. This could have a significant impact on his developing attitudes toward his genitals and sex in general.
i hope this response is helpful. Good luck!

Okay where is dad on this issue? What is the opinion of the coach? If they aren't concerned then this may be your problem. Obviously your son has developed a behavioral habit that is like a nervous habit of other types. He is doing this with out being aware of his behavior and is not old enough to have had the modesty developement of puberty set in so he has no self motivation to change this. First make sure that he is wearing comfortable clothes and supporter (with a cup) so he has room. Even 9 year olds need room. Then explain to him that what he is doing is not acceptable behavior in the adult world and is giving the impression that he is playing with his penis which is not the same as arranging it on occasion to be comfortable. Then take a video camera and video him (without being obvious about why) You are a mom and moms can video their kids in a game. Then in the privacy of your home have him sit down with a pencil and paper and watch the video and have him make a check on the paper everytime he touches his penis. Then try and work out a behavior modification plan so he can break the habit. Be careful here though you don't want to create to much anxiety about this or he will develop other hang ups. You could see a family counselor about this and remove it from your concerns. Good luck and assure your 9 year old that he is okay, normal, etc.

I read some of the replies and have to admit some made me laugh. I take it he's a pitcher. If that's the case tell him to use his glove to hide his "adjusting" while on the mound. If he's doing it after a pitch while a batter advise him to face the outfield more directly. He may need to simply wear a better fitted, more restraining, jock supporter. What may be happening is he is "emulating" the pros - his heroes. Be thankful he isn't spitting all over the place!! While I feel your pain, lol!

Sorry but after many experiences I really don’t know what is true or not in this chat!
Your question sounds so strange and it just seems you’re just peeping in your son continuously!
Even little boys need their privacy. I don’t know what you meant with “bad habit” and how/when/where he does that or if – evidently – he just is imitating someone else.
I remember my little brother touched and played with his genitals too when he was a little baby but only when my mum didn’t change, in due time, the diaper (cause diaper rush, evidently!)
Later he resumed that strange habit during the development but it’s a rare event by now.
Anyway, you can talk with your son asking – freely – something about his habit! At 9 years, he is old enough for giving you a satisfying motivation!

Well if he is a ball player, he might be doing it to adjust is cup to keep the luggage in check. Assuming he wears a cup. Also at 9 years old he maybe mimicing what he sees older ball players do that do wear cups. One last thing, it's probably not the case, but if he wears briefs it is probable that they are too small and cause discomfort to his testicles. When I was getting older I had to beg my mother to buy me bigger underwear. It's VERY uncomfortable. Last but not least it could be jock itch.

If he is doing it in public, then there is a big problem. If he is just adjusting, that is normal. Guys have to adjust, although guys are usually more discrete. Maybe he sees other adult guys doing it, and he is modeling after what he sees. No offense, but he could just have a large penis for his age, and be self-conscious of it. If he is outright masturbating in public, then you need to sit down with him and explain that touching your genitals in public is not acceptable social behavior, and try to find him something else to do with his hands. Might be a good excuse to get him a gameboy or PSP, LOL. Or just remind him to put his hands in his pockets or something.

Don't worry hun.Its natural.I think most boys do it.He'll grow out of it.He's just a young lad growing up and trying to find answers the way only kids can. You're looking at it from an adult perspective.Don't worry.

I would try to explain to him that it's impolite to touch his private parts in public. If he's wearing those stretchy pants I had to wear when I played baseball, it is difficult not to want to move it around because the material is all up against it. Pay attention to see if he does this when wearing shorts or regular pants. He just needs to learn to keep his hands off it.

its quite normal. my nephew does this too. i am sure that in a couple of years, when he is a teen and he gets to know his body better will stop doing this. don't worry too much over it and ignore people's comments. he is a big boy now, so I'm sure that if he needs to pee, he won't touch it... he'll just go to the toilet
