Actually, as a technical matter it is referred to as home base, but because it is a flat plate as opposed to the "bags" (as they are often called) at the other bases, the term "plate" has become the common usage. If you look at older references, you will see the term "home base."

That's not a stupid question! That's actually really interesting because I've never even thought about that! To be honest, I don't know, but I would like to... I'm assuming because all the bases are shaped differently than the plate, and the fact that they are full of padding, where as the plate is simply flat like a plate? I don't know, good question!

Home Plate is made from a different material than the 3 bases...there is no good reason they don't call it Home Base...maybe it didn't sound good to the guys that first named it that?
Good question, but I doubt there is a correct answer. Maybe because they wanted it to stand out...it means more than the other bases...when you cross it, you score runs...so maybe they wanted it to stand out from the other 3.

It is frequently called home base. The actual home base is made of hard plastic, hence plate. The other bases are "bags" made from cloth hence the term for a double is a "two-bagger"

I think baseball lore has it that at one time a regular plate was used for "home base" and the name stuck. Good question!

From the mlb.com site:
A BASE is one of four points which must be touched by a runner in order to score a run; more usually applied to the canvas bags and the rubber plate which mark the base points.

It's not a stupid question. It has to do with the size.
Bases are square, home plate is not.
