I moved house this year and the front and back lawns where full of moss, daisies, buttercups and other weeds. I have gotten rid of the moss and have had some success with grass seeds but for next spring I would like to begin the preparation for the perfect lawn without buying a new one (I have spent to much time weeding, raking and forking to give in) Please help I have never had to garden before.

Ahhh... better living through chemistry, lol! There are quite a few spray weed killers out there but WATER is going to be the key. Weeds can grow in the slimmest of conditions and will take bigger advantage of small amounts of water/nutrients than grass can... that's why they are such persistent little bastards. Watering grass just a little will actually be more damaging as it brings the grass roots closer to the surface to grab that water and then the sun will "cook" them. Neighbors lawns are a big concern in getting weeds OUT of your lawn... if they have them, you will to so have a chat with your immediate neighbors about their lawns. Cutting your grass too short also gives weeds an added ability as they will get more sunlight to get started...
Thus... cut your grass to 3-4 inches height, spray for weeds using the type of killer that hooks directly to your hose when at least 2 days of no rain is coming, water once a week minimum during a drought if possible in the morning as watering at night may lead to fungus and moss growth, pick up a cheap pH kit at your local lawn and garden center as well as a good fertilizer high in nitrogen (30-20-20 on the bag represents Nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium in that order) and most importantly... water thoroughly... not a little today and more tomorrow. This will get ya started.

To get a perfect lawn you'll need to completely remove the existing lawn - remove all the turf, level the lawn foundation completely with fine sand an compost. Roll the area as flat as possible. Buy the best quality turf you can find and lay it. If you buy the right turf you will end up with a lawn looking something like a bowling green. There is a variety of Canadian grass which will grow in shady places, not sure of it's name but look it up and try it. Think it might be called Canadian wood grass or something.

install a sprinkler system before winter if you can. after the first thaw, spread weed killer. preen or scotts, something like that. water daily. just before the spring rains stop (around late may in Michigan) spread a mixture of grass seed and fertilizer. you can hydroseed instead of using seed, but let the hydroseed sit for about a 2 weeks before you set out the fertilizer. continue to water daily or as needed if you get a lot of rain in your area.

in case you try to get rid of crab grass, the quite huge grass, it really is virtually no longer plausible. you could cut back the backyard to the bone and desire it regrows more beneficial pleasingly, yet when it does it really is mere twist of destiny. you could attempt to Cal-trim your backyard, the variety of cut back that they do on golfing vegetables nearest the flag, yet that calls for a particular mower. in case you pass that direction, it is going to likely be yellowish and brown in the beginning, yet an excellent variety of water and upkeep will make it seem immaculate.

wait until wembley stadium is finished and turfed.
The try sneeking in and nicking their Turf. ;)
For that added touch, you could wait until England win at home so your new garden has some history behind it. Then again, you might have a long wait.
