If it's just one, there's no prob. Licking a bunch of stamps or envelopes (like for invitations etc) can give you dry mouth (not to mention horrible breath)--use a slightly damp sponge.
There's nothing "improper" socially about licking an envelope--but if you lick the self-adhesive ones they won't seal.

It's entirely up to the person doing the sealing. I personally find it's not very hygenic. No telling what the glue came in contact with (bugs, dirt, etc.). And then there's the lovely papercut on the tongue. I've actually done that. Now I prefer to wet my finger and run it over the glue or better yet, get the envelopes with the strip you just peel off the sticky part.

If you lick your envelopes... You won't anymore!!!!!
A woman was working in a post office in California, one day she licked the envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge. That very day the lady cut her tongue on the envelope.

A week later, she noticed an abnormal swelling of her tongue. She went to the doctor, and they found nothing wrong. Her tongue was not sore or anything.

A couple of days later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began to get really sore, so sore, that she could not eat. She went back to the hospital, and demanded something be done. The doctor, took an x-ray of her tongue, and noticed a lump. He prepared her for minor surgery.

When the doctor cut her tongue open, a live roach crawled out. There were roach eggs on the seal of the envelope. The egg was able to hatch inside of her tongue, because of her saliva. It was warm and moist...

This is a true story... Pass it on

I do sealing an envelope by my tongue as many people do because it is practically. But I think it is a bad habit. It is better if we use a wet spounge. Its envelope maybe a dirty one and it will be sucked by our tongues.or our tongues will be hurt by the end part of its paper.

No,It isn't.Not only is it bad manners,it's also bad for health. These envelopes have been sitting in warehouses for months and the gum may have dust and germs and a whole lot more.Once I read a story about a man who had some insects grow in his mouth because he licked the gum on envelopes which had insect eggs in them.Ughhh...No,please don't do it.

it doesn't matter if you do that or use a sponge, but seriously, you don't wanna know how many bugs crawl around and leave things BEHIND for you to consume, gross!! I found that out on a TV program. Go for adhesive envelopes, the kind that already have sticky glue on them so you don't have to use your tongue. Or just use a sponge

I think not. What does it look like for a grown man or woman to lick a piece of paper?

On top of that, our times, we had a couple people die from licking envelopes. Someone decided to exchange bank atm deposit envelopes with drugged ones. Everyone who licked it, died. It was two people that died.

Proper? We need not think of proper anymore. We need think of safety. The old adage still holds. "Safety first"

It's entirely personal. There is no "proper" or "improper" way to seal an envelope.

I really think you probably have more important things to worry about.
