I don't know but maybe you could ask a a pet store and if they don't know you could always go to a library and look in a few fish books.

Has his temperature remained constant (at around 78 degrees) lately? Is his tank filtered? Have you changed the filter medium lately? Have you tested your water parameters lately, and have they tested ok? Namely, ammonia and nitrite at 0ppm, nitrates at less than 20ppm, pH at around 7.0. Have you done weekly 20% water changes (if he's in a filtered tank) or daily 50% water changes (if he's in a bowl)? If not, you need to start.
If his water parameters are ok, the temperature has remained constant, you've kept on top of your water changes and basically taken good care of him, he's probably sick. You'll need to start keeping an eye out for growths, discolorations, or lesions to manifest. When this happens, come back and post another question.
EDIT for the person below me and to all you other who think teasing bettas with a mirror is a good idea: This adds unneccessary stress, as the betta thinks there is another fish there and gets agitated. Do this too often, and you will end up weakening your fish's immune system, possibly ultimately leading him to his death. Please do not use mirrors to stimulate your fish.

He sounds normal to me. Are you giving him that freeze dried stuff or the real thing, live food? The reason he is hanging up at the top is he is probably getting ready to blow some bubbles and start building a nest, using the plant as an anchor. Get him some real live food, such as tubifex worms, rinsed brine shrimp, or mosquitoe larvae.
You want to make him real happy, get the mosquitoes and you will watch him hunt down and eat those suckers. If he starts making a nest, make him happy with a sweetheart...and then ask another question for that one.

Your betta is honestly very happy and extremely wholesome. The bubbles around his tank are referred to as a "bubble nest", and what bettas do to show that they are waiting to reproduce. nicely finished on giving your betta a satisfied abode!

I hope is in at least a 5 gallon tank with a filter, and bubbler, and heater. They are just like other fish. It might be because of bad water quality. The food might be to hard for him to swallow. One of my bettas had a deformed mouth and i fed him freeze dried blood worms. I had to cut them into small peices though. Try them...GOOD LUCK!!!

I think your betta fish may have depression. I am NOT kidding, this can happen to anybody, even fish. What I recommend is changing his water completely, and if he has siblings, put him in with them, though in a seperate bag/jar, so he can't actually SWIM with them.

Wat i can tell u is that Betta fish stick their gills out at someone when they want to fight with them.put a mirror against his tank and he will puff out at his own self.Betta fish r aggressive about their territory so they will eat smaller fish and try fitting with larger fish.
hope this help contace me if this process with the mirror works.
