A successful lay-up is invaluable. It is only worth 2 points, unless you get fouled in the act. However, it exploits the interior defense, and opens up the outside jumper for the other shooters. In turn, this usually sets the tone for a simple inside-out game unless the defense can adjust.

not only does it add 2 points to the score, but it also shows that you were able to penetrate the defense and get to the basket.
