Has anyone else been annoyed by WH Smiths staff trying to force them to buy almost-out-of-date-chocolate when all they really want is a newspaper? I'm getting really fed up with pushy sales people -it usually has the opposite effect in that I don't buy anything, and just leave the store altogether.

Yes! I get that too, can't say it bothers me much though (but then I am one of the lucky few that doesn't have to watch my weight!)

What really bothers me is the 20 questions routine you get at some stores;
"Do you have a club card", "Do you want a club card", "Do you want cash back", "Do you want to take advantage of our special offer", "Do you want to take out additional cover with that"

AAaAAaaAAGH it drives me bananas.!

All I do want to do is buy my stuff and go!!!

Start a campaign to stop bothering us at the checkout - I'll be your first recruit!

I HAVE experienced this and know where you are coming from. Its a selling technique I was taught once at Body Shop where you specifically ask whether the customer wants a particular product as well as what they are buying.

It is very annoying as quite often I end up buying the chocolate, because I like chocolate, when I hadn't intended to buy any.

Reason? Money! (Have you noticed its the huge bars they push)

I have never experienced this. I hope it is just the policy of that individual branch of WH Smith and not a headquarter policy. It is not very British for sales people to be pushy to customers. If you are so annoyed, I suggest you write to their head office and tell them how you feel.

Yeah!
The guy in the WH Smith at my local train station keeps offering me jumbo bars of chocolate for half the price! I'm either going to get really fat, or really bored (because I haven't got anything to read!)

Maybe they think you need fattening up and then they will kidnap you and eat you at the" WH Smith christmas eat a customer party"

That has never happened to me. Maybe its just the WH Smith stores in your area.

I used to work there and we were told to try to sell the stuff. We were given a quota of the amount of things we were meant to sell each day and had to try to achieve it. Actually, I was pretty good at it. It was just our job. But I understand it being annoying. I don't like it when I go in as a customer and get it!

Sounds like some toffee board room decision to try and make more money. Absolute bollocks if you ask me, if I want sweets I'll go to a sweet shop! I never buy drinks or sweets from WHSmiths.

Pay for your paper using the quick drop thing - that way you don't have to deal with the staff and their fattening tactics!
