If you're set on buying a toy for your nephew, I would recommend LEGO toys, specifically DUPLO toys. They're right for his age and because they're LEGO toys they'll work with other LEGO toys as he grows older. A child has a lifetime of play possibilities with LEGO toys. I still buy and build LEGO sets. I also have a four-year old nephew who loves the Thomas the Tank Engine DUPLO set I bought him. He now has the entire Island of Sodor collection.
That said, I would strongly encourage you to buy him books. Actually, I think a weeks worth of books would be a truly inspired gift!
Here are seven books you should consider:
"Some Dogs Do" by Jez Alborough
"Bark, George" by Jules Feiffer
"Sheep on a Jeep" by Nancy E. Shaw and Margot Apple
"Duck on a Bike" by David Shannon
"One Red Dot" by David A. Carter
"Ella Sarah Gets Dressed" by Margaret Chodos-Irvine
"How Loud is a Lion?" by Stella Blackstone and Clare Beaton
I can suggest others. Feel free to contact me via e-mail. I'm a school librarian, and a volunteer reader (a very good one!) for the Denver Public Library and the Children's Museum of Denver.
