They all annoyed me the first time around, with their strikes a few years ago. I'm in the RAF. I had just completed my engineering training 6 months previous (so was just learning the ropes on the real job) and I was called up for firefighter training! I was made to do the full breathing apparatus training (air bottle on my back etc) and then I served in Hull during the strikes. I was livid, as I was missing out on "on the job" engineering training. I lost 6 months of active experience covering the bloody strikes. When I got back, some colleagues thought I was a brand new lad, as they hadn't seen me before.

The general public don't realise that very few of the military personnel covering the strikes joined up to be Firefighters. We were infantry, engineers, photographers etc. Many of us were overqualified for this task. There was at least one military firefighter in command of each team, but the rest of us were other trades.

Thanks, FBU, for making me lose engineering experience (still not happy about it today).

Michael K, I don't blame the firefighters, I blame the FBU. They shouldn't have resorted to strikes. They should have found a better way. We were able to cover the strikes, but if anything major happened, we'd struggle. The armed forces, Paramedics, and police can't strike, so why should the firefighters?

To those who say the firefighters are being irrisponsible by striking, and that they big girls and are paid well for the job they do, I ask this,

HOW MUCH is " Wel Paidl" for risking your life every day at work.

As for Ste's comments:
"Did you know that many firefighters work 4 days on, 4 days off and have cash in hand jobs on the side?"

All I can say to that is if they need a job on the side it says a lot about the wages.

Also as for the 4 days on 4 off you forgot to say what hours were worked. Methinks the first two days worked are 14 hour shifts.

What else can firefighters do, just accept things as they are of fight for the right to be paid a decent wage for a job that most of us would never have the bottle to do.

Last I heard there was a waiting list of people wanting to be firefighters. Why should the existing ones be able to strike when people are queueing up for their jobs?

Did you know that many firefighters work 4 days on, 4 days off and have cash in hand jobs on the side?

I understand their motives, promotion of none experienced staff to management does effect moral and performance, Ti's happening in many statutory services ... as for the strike, well in one way Ti's good to see a collective standing together for their rights, gives the army some experience they may not other wise have, but also I expect public support will Wain
re genghis41f, Ti's good to hear this opinion too, as we don't really get to hear what the services covering fire strikes feel..

It is there right to strike at the end of the day....and personally they put there lives on the line everyday so why shouldnt they get a generous reward for that......ask your self this
Can you put a price on the 9/11 response in america!!!!
And what if that was ever to happen here?

My honest opinion...I dont think fire fighters should go on strike as not everyone knows how to put out a fire or even rescue someone from a fire. Firefighters dont only deal with fire; they rescue cats from trees and rescue trapped people out of vehicle accidents too, along with many more things. there jobs are supposed to be life saving but how can anyone survive if fire fighters are on strike

Firefighters, like nurses are treated like sh*t.It's a shame they are forced to strike to get a living wage.Promotion should only go to those who experienced front-line duty for several years. They are the people who would get the priorities right,there-by giving a better service to the public. It's funny (not) when those who criticise firefighters actually need their services, suddenly think of them as heros.

They cry because they think they should be paid more since their job is deadly like as such the Police Deaprtment. The natural is that more police officers work harder than firefighters, bit officers are lazier.

Firefighters should be declared as essential and not be allowed to strike.

They should use other methods to get what they believe they deserve.

I don't think it's right for firemen to strike. Especially over pay. They are supposed to be dedicated for the love of the job. Nobody forces them to do this.
