Separate the act, to the choice, to the desires and then what you believe in each as separates should create one picture as a whole
The choice you take is yours, but will you be following your beliefs or what you want?
What you want, and what you believe in can more often than not be two entirely different things fighting each other-trying to put them together as one when shouldn't be.
Is the believe related to the hope or what is in your heart?
Hope is held in the hand, the belief is held in the heart, put your heart in your hand and allow time to show you the truth

Your argument fell in on itself. You start with the assumption that your beliefs and desires are not in your direct control. You then attempt to work backwards from there ending in the word 'since.'
And then you concluded question the validity of your acts being free.
Understand that believing in logic is not always the common sense thing to do.

you are not a dump machine following a particular algorithm. Your desires are not in your control, i agree. But what you believe is in your control at least partially, though not completely. But when you make a choice for the actions you need to do, you should use your consciousness also, like how your act is gonna affect others.
The key idea is use your brain also while choosing the act (I mean not only the heart)

I would consider your beliefs to be something you choose, but that is a matter of opinion. Same thing with your desires, my opinion is that you choose to act on them or not. But that's not an answer.
Study of neural activity during the decision making process seems to indicate that we first act, and -then- the "decision making" portion of the brain is activated. If this is so, then what we are actually doing isn't deciding, as such, but justifying what we already did. In which case, your acts are not free, they are the result of pre-programed responses to stimuli.
Depressing.

Actually your ability to ask this question demonstrates your awareness and ability to freely choose and interfere.
Sometimes people can act against their desires if they deprive themselves from eating while they are hungry! And if this is done out of their beliefs, then they had the chance and freedom to choose their own beliefs.
And this is free will! Otherwise all people would follow only one belief, but they were given this gift of freedom by their Creator to choose freely.

Because of the moments in life when you just sit down and think, that's when your beliefs and desires are in your direct control, you think about life, what it means to you, what you want to get, all of thos ephilisophical questions and you start to gain control ove ryoru life, but since very few people ever do that, most people just live blindly and don't ever stop to think.

Why would your beliefs and desires not be under your direct control? Whose control would they be under, if not your own?
Is there someone behind the scenes pulling your puppet strings and making you dance?

Man has lots of cute sayings. That apply to some situations, but not all. We live in a material world. If you bump your head against
the wall, it's going to hurt.
There are 8 bilion people in this world, and somebody has got
to stepping on someboy's toes. We are asked in schools of
thought, to not waste time comong up with silly questions. But
rather, use our God-given minds to come up with answers.

your beliefs and desires are in your control. you are a human: you have the ability to rationalise.
for instance, you do not accept everything you are told: santa claus does not exist, the easter bunny doesn't exist, the jewish population are not an inferior race, etc. you choose what you believe to be true and not true.

You are responsible for your acts because you do choose your beliefs and choose whether to act on your desires.
There are a few exceptions (e.g., molested children are not responsible for their actions).
