Are you sure it is the iron? It could be the ironing board. I went on holiday to a rented cottage the other week, and thought that the freshly laundered clothes I was ironing smelled a bit mildewy. It turned out that the ironing board cover had been put away damp and this was what was causing the smell. Just a thought.
Another thought.
Is it a new iron? Can you take it back?

Wash the iron - rinse through with distilled water, then make sure the base in clean, then buy this conditioner stuff which goes in the iron with the water. That should solve the problem - BUT quicker, easier and probably not that more expensive would be to go out and buy a new iren.

What kind of smell?

Use a descaler in the water reservoir of the iron to clear away any deposits, then if smell remains, it might be your water that is questionable. Try distilled water?

Finally, the heat of the iron could be activating smells in the clothes that washing didnt remove. Try a hotter wash or an anti-bacterial agent in the wash.

Put some white vinegar through your iron to dissolve the minerals. Then be sure to put some distilled water through it a couple times to clean the vinegar out. And use distilled or filtered water in the future.

Either that, or buy a new iron. They aren't that expensive these days.

i agree w cleaning iron w vinegar, but let some of it steam out. when rinsing with the water, let is steam out also (to make sure you clean all the inside parts.) using distilled water too may prevent smell as well as not leaving water in the iron between uses.

Instead of spending money on shop bought fabric sprays...fill a spray bottle with a mix of water and lavender oil, or equivalent 'smell' and spray on your clothes as you iron....beautiful!

is it a steam iron ? if it is use distilled water with a few drops of your favourite perfume in. However if it is a dry iron i would say it is a laundry product you are using and not your iron

be careful of the water you put in the iron...it should be distilled. And do you spray your clothes with starch? That might be it too
