The crap you sue for on Judge Judy and stuff in the papers is ridiculous.

Because thanks to welfare and other social programs, many Americans have a sense of entitlement. They think they're owed things and that they're not responsible for their actions. If they do something and they get hurt, they're immediately looking for someone else to blame.

This is not all Americans, but it's a lot of them. And it gets worse the bigger the government gets.

People want stuff without having to do any hard graft for it, and now we are in the times where sharing is a foreign concept. People are wanting obscene amounts of wealth to themselves. More than they can spend in some cases and an easy way to get there is to actually blame someone for what's actually an accident. I am sure the rest of the world will start to follow suit in some form, but America seems to be the worst for it. I often feel that Americans do have different mind sets from the rest of the world as they are arguably the most influential and powerful country in the world. So their ego's tell them that they deserve all they can get. Then the lawyers see a way of making a fast buck by finding ridiculous loopholes in the law to win these cases. I suppose it's a bit like having a computer game where a select few know the cheats to get extra lives, money etc whereas everyone else plods along normally. We all get to the end and no matter how much you sue your neighbour for, you're gonna need to leave it behind anyway.

Judge Judy is a TV show, be real. 99% of that crap is just that, CRAP. I am suing someone right now but I was hit by an 18 wheeler who thought he owned the road and I am lucky to be alive and all his company said was "It's a good thing he didn't hit you in the rear it would have killed you" then they denied liability for the accident which he was given 3 tickets for. Sometimes we sue for medical and all we lost since I have not been able to work for a year and still am not allowed to work. This accident has ruined me for the rest of my life, I have lost my good credit which is all a person has to survive sometimes. I lost my transportation and almost losing my home. Do you think I have a right to sue? Problem is they have 3 years before they have to pay, that's the law. In the meantime where does that leave me and the two children I still have to raise. The ones that do the Judge Judy thing are just doing it as a way to get on TV.

Several people above have indicated the reason: too many lawyers. But why?

The crucial difference between qualifying as a lawyer in England and in most American states is this: you cannot become a lawyer in England UNLESS you have a job. To qualify as a solicitor, one must have a degree, spend at least a year attending a special vocational course, pass a difficult examination and then be employed for two years by a firm of solicitors as a trainee solicitor. This means, therefore, that the number of solictors in the system is limited entirely by the market; firms of solicitors will not employ trainees if they have no commercial need for them. Ultimately, the number of qualified solicitors is large or as small as the market can sustain.

If you look at the system in, say, New York, you will see why there are so many lawyers. To be a qualified attorny of the State of New York one is not required to be employed by a firm of attorneys. if you pass the bar exam - a difficult and expensive examination - you automatically qualify as an attorney and are free to practise law. Result: you end up with a lot of very intelligent people in debt and in need of employment. Any surprise that they have thought up (and continue to think up) all manner of schemes by which they can stay employed?

The consequence of this over the years has been that some lawyers have made a lot of money and caused the others to want to do the same. At the same time, because of the financial incentive, the profession has become increasingly popular, so more and more people have wanted to become lawyers. A vicious circle!

It has gotten out of hand. Lawyers are greedy and people are greedy. There was a plane crash in my state on Sunday, on Wednesday, 3 attorneys ran ads in the paper directed toward the families of the victims of the crash. They had to pull the ads, they violated an "ethics in advertising" law. They had no concern for the feelings of those families, they only saw the $$$$$.
All of these lawsuits just add up to increased cost for everyone, increased healthcare cost, auto insurance premiums, cost of pharmaceuticals. Doctors are refusing to treat some conditions because increased lawsuits. The malpractice insurance for some specialties is so high, doctors are not going into those specialties anymore.
Most of the people on the tv shows are just stupid. I've seen some legitimate arguments but most just want some sort of revenge.

Because you can... if you dont have a case you wont win. keep in mind that judge judy is entertainment, a television show... everyone is not sue happy. I'm not sure I know anyone who has sued for something so petty. I do know a kid who won a case against mcdonalds because he slipped on a freshly mopped floor that did not have a wet floor warning when he was very young. He had heavy medical bills for rehabilitation and got mcdonalds to pay for them. I think thats a fairly legitimate case.

not sure, but it does seem overboard at times.. u would think ppl would talk and try to resolve... and i believe, unfortunately, by suing for things that we may seem as trivial, will find its way into most cultures and become a normal way of life. I read online an American paper and i am very much mortiifed at times with what i read with how the people over there can basically have you arrested for so much as looking at you the wrong way.... I really dont understand why they sue for "everything'....

It's the new American lottery. The odds are much better that you'll hit the jackpot suing a pharmaceutical company, for example, than that your $1.00 ticket will turn in to $325,000,000.00. It also helps that trial lawyers are also more than happy to take these cases on. Imagine what the fear of being sued for multi-millions is doing to squash innovation in certain industries...

well because they think like this-
if they work they might loose weight and having the most over weight people they dont want to. so they take the easy option
sue companies like mc donalds for making them FAT but why did they go there in the first place? and it is easy money
many of them just want easy money to buy computers and phones and george bush likes to start wars for oil which is like money.so every american is after something!
