You are trying to find reason from madness. There is no viable explanation for having nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, if one side has them then the other side must also. We maintained a balance of power with the Soviet Union through MAD (mutually assured destruction). This doctrine did indeed make us safer, because their very existence kept the Soviets from entertaining any real thoughts of invading us. This is not a justification, merely an explanation. The sad fact is that someone was going to develop nukes, if it had been Hitler the world would be a very different place today. Terrorists are not particularly threatened by nukes because they do not owe allegiance to any single country, and therefore do not have territory which is at risk. I would like to see all nukes destroyed, but it is not going to happen. New countries are joining the nuclear club, and threaten to re-ignite the arms race again.
To answer your question.
Do they make us safer? No they don't.
Can we live without them? Yes we can.
Are we going to live without them? No we are not.

In a morbid way, nuclear weapons have brought peace to the world. Up until the end of WWII, wars continuously broke out between countries. These wars reoccurred every 20 or 30 years as countries developed bigger and bigger guns and bombs. The advent of the nuclear bomb finally made warfare an unacceptable method of settling differences between countries.
Although nuclear weapons have no effect on a war of terrorism, they at least stopped wars between nations.
One would have to admit that if Iraq had nuclear weapons, we would have never invaded the country.

Well, the nuclear weapon buildup was at a time during the Cold War when the biggest stick was the winner. The time of using nuclear weapons is long gone... unless you are a fanatical leader of a Facist Country who is determined to wipe out anyone in the world who has a different belief... fortunately... George Bush will be out of office in another 2 years.

You have to keep it all in context. They had their day (for the superpowers) when this kept Russia from invading other countries etc. It was called Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Those days are long gone. Now the balance is the other way. They are our key fear for a different reason. If Iran wants to they can decimate Israel once they have them built. And if you look at how crazy they are this is not a stretch to think they would.

If man can make something to make himself more powerful, then it will be made.
There's nothing to do with peace keeping, Nuclear weapons are on earth just because they can be made. After they're made, someone can hardly go "Oh crap, I've made something that can destroy every single one of us, I'll need to go to the basement and destroy it". That would kill us all too.
A valid reason for killing us all however....maybe we all get some sort of plague? And the solution is to either kill ourselves or chew off our own testicles....I think I know which I'd go for. For those without testicles, think of something equally horrific.

Absolutely, they are the ultimate in peace keeping power. We with the gipper at the helm, Ronald Wilson Reagan, were ready to go toe to toe thermonuclear combat with the Ruskies and they backed down.....The gipper brought down the Berlin wall and brought peace to this world......Lets warm a few up and get ready to fight Magog of Tehran!

Actually they do- youre just too short sighted to see it
Like I said earlier today- MAD is a peacekeeping tool
Mutually Assured Destruction. If you nuke one of my population centers then Ill nuke yours.
Its crazy but it works
So you know that the terrorists do not fear them. Thats precisely why Iran should not have them.
There is hope for you yet

The nuclear weapon does not have a mind of its own. It can be used by men to bring peace or wreck havoc. It is finally the hand that pushes the button

this all started during the cold war! Russia had pointed theirs at the US and the US had theirs pointed at Russia. Did it make us safer? I say yes just because of the fear that a first strike would bring a retaliatory strike and both countries would end up being nothing more that a wasteland.Sounds stupid but it was peace through fear!!!!

The idea here is that they are a big deterrent,
They will work against a whole country's army but not a terrorist group hiding amongst non combatants. Just look at Israel and there problem.
