non-contact sport to develop upper body size and strength, excluding work in the gym? A friend recommended rock climbing, would you say this is accurate?

swimming... no impact, works the whole body.

No, not size and strength. Just strength. You'll get whipcord thin.
If you want upper body size, then swimming, tennis or the highland/lumberjack games would fit the bill better.
Nothing beats rock climbing for strength though.

Rock climbing will definitely help with upper body strength and toning muscles. Swimming and weights can also help - maybe a mixture of exercises would be best, help work different muscles and avoid tedium

i climb trees for work and find it's an incredible 'all-over' work-out, if you want to work specifically on upper-body how-ever a more motion specific sport is for you, like, i-don't-know, javelin shot-put but i'm sure professionals in this area work-out at the gym.............also it sounds like you want to get big and 'buff' to me, i could be wrong but if this is the case, putting on weight isn't condusive to climbing if you see what i mean.........

No idea if it is the best as I would have to read a corroborated scientific study - but rock climbing is fun!

Swimming is also great for upper body building.

What do you care? If you were serious, you would exercise to get stronger and fitter, not look for an "easy" way out of it.
