Self respect is when you know your good.....Ego is when you think your better than everyone else. Self respect is when you know your attractive.....Ego is when you think your more attractive than anyone else. Self repsect is when you know your intelligent......Ego is when you tell everyone how smart you are. There's a couple examples.

Freud broke it down like this.
The Id- the selfish like before you learn things, such a baby crying for food. You are only interested in fulfilling your own desire.
The Ego- Supposed to be what you acquire as you are growing. Im probably not stating this as well as somebody else might. Everyone needs to have an ego.
Super-Ego - Now that is a conceited person.
Supposedly, we have all three. Ever read the Wizard of Id on the comic pages of a newspaper. It is very funny.
Self respect to me simply means you respect yourself and you should respect yourself.
I hope this helps. Ego means different things to different people, just read a little Freud or Eric Berne.

The ego is simply our personality, who we are in this life. It is by nature, very focused here in reality and in charge of keeping us who we are. People often call others egotistical but that is the way it has to be or we wouldn't survive. Everyone has a big ego!
Now some people don't feel worthy because of whatever reasons and lack self-respect. They get a distorted picture of the self and believe it to be true. Say they were treated badly as a child. Then they didn't react as they wished they had so they think badly of themselves for that and lose their self-respect. Their ego will push them to overcome this reduced self image and rebuild self-respect.

Ego is your way of looking at things or your mindset which is a part of ones attitude
Self respect is when your own ego knows what you are doing is not affecting your own sentiments and unsaid principles
Ego needs to be low and self-respect needs to be high thats what need to concentrated on and there would be pages written on ego and self respect its our perception which draws a line

I think the first two answers are a load of bull. Ego can be carried to the extreme as in their examples, but it is a necessary thing to one's well being. To me self esteem, self respect, and ego are practically the same and vital to one having confidence in one's self. They are inextricably intertwined, so to speak. Let's look at the definition of ego and see if I'm right:
1 : the self especially as contrasted with another self or the world
2 a : EGOTISM 2 b : SELF-ESTEEM 1
3 : the one of the three divisions of the psyche in psychoanalytic theory that serves as the organized conscious mediator between the person and reality especially by functioning both in the perception of and adaptation to reality
Looks like I am (as usual). Egotism can be a less than savory characteristic if overdone, but that's different than plain ego. Normal ego, like mine, is just healthy self respect with a fair amount of self esteem mixed in for good measure. Having recently come back from 5 years of depression where I hated myself enough to want to die, I can tell you how important it is to have good self esteem, self respect, and healthy ego. Without them, mental illness is certainly a possibility if not likely.
'Nuff said?
