In Plato's Republic he says that people rule their souls much as nations rule themselves. The ruling leadership is reason over the passionate military and rabble desires of the masses. Some of us place a tyranny of one aim at the helm of our government and we will walk over other "nations" to reach this goal. For others its a Plutocracy of money in which we live to earn. And this in turn leads to how you have "foreign relations" with other people.
Tell me friends-how do you govern yourself, in what way and how does this affect your relations with others?

There is no question that the way we view ourselves and govern our own affairs affects the way we interact with others. You could strand yourself on a desert island, away from all humans and all societies but you are still going to have to deal with yourself. So, it is inevitable that you must live with yourself and have respect yourself to achieve a certain level of happiness. And happiness is certainly something that is a constant goal in our lives.

With that said, if you aren't happy with yourself and govern yourself in a disrespectful manner, how can you possibly do the same to others?

It seems very cliche and it kills me to say it but we must treat others like you want yourself to be treated. I believe there is a lot of truth to this statement. (even though I am outrageously opposed to cliches)

If we want to understand the world and our neighbors, we must first have respect for ourselves and then all else can follow.

Plato's republic is a wonderous book. Mind blowing. Um, I don't even know what reality is anymore as I'm so vastly read that I don't think with the mind I had as a 19year old. But what do I care, I love society and I love my kid and wife, so all is well with the world. That's how I brainwash myself, and, as all of the world's greats did it, I feel safe.

tough one.

im an introvert by nature. i thrive in peace and solitude. my functioning is not so much greatly affected by the whims of others.

im my own harshest judge. i separate work from play. i work hard. and i play hard. i set standards for myself which i try to uphold. and i expect the same from others.

in work, i have the tendency to be an idealist. there has to be a system, and it has to be orderly. i can follow, and i can lead. but i like being the strength of the leader. i do not like center-stage. it requires you to have superhuman strength to catalyze not just you as a leader, but the whole team. if the team does not function well and likes to be dragged along, that drains my energy. i will see the task through and shoulder the burden, but the members get left behind---not a good quality of a leader. when i follow, i expect high standards from my leaders. i can be supportive, but i always live by the rule, "to be a good leader, you must be a good follower". act irresponsibly and you will lose my trust and respect. be a good leader and model and i shall give you my best and support you in whatever task that you choose to endeavor. and sometimes, if the going gets tough, i tend to be frank and tell them what is wrong with the team dynamics.

you might see me as harsh, but it is amazing the kind of people you meet using this approach. they are always the kind that are for keeps.

in play, i tend to stick with people who have the same values and virtues as mine. i set no rules for the type of fun so long as it does not go against my principles.
