I'm working on one at work, and it sounds like my hard drive is revving up and then it'll last for about 3-5 minutes and go off again.

Could be the hard drive, or it could be one of the fans inside the computer. Recommend that if you have a computer support person/department that you ask them to check it. A noisy hard drive like that is somethings the first sign that the drive is going bad. May want to have it checked before it crashes and you lose everything on it.

But more often it is one of the fans rubbing against something in the case, wearing out, and in need of cleaning.

If you are most definite the noise is coming from the HDD (hard disk drive), it may mean your HDD is about to go. Is it loud only when the Case is opened? Or does it sound loud all the time?

Yes, some HDD's has something like a fan belt. Inside some HDD casings there is a rubber grommet that is attached to the main platter spindle and a smaller spindle. This is true mostly for older HDD's. But, you would not be able to here if this was going bad. Normally what you are hearing is the platters revving up to speed. The Platters need to be spinning at a certain (factory) speed for the read/write functions. Beside the rubber grommet, the main platter spindle has bearings. You are probably hearing the bearings.

That is just the spinning of the disk drives, probably the motor.
It does that occassionally, especially when you are accessing data at the moment. That's normal.

But it isn't a fan-belt. ;)

Computers have quite a few fans, and it sounds like one of yours is temperature sensitive. That is, when your computer's internal temperature reaches a certain point, the fan kicks on.

It sounds like one of your fans may be reaching "end of life," and will need to be replaced.

temperature sensitive fan is most likely and ok
hd runs wide open 5200 or 7200 or 10k depending on the hd and usually quiet
adding fans is cheap
have them pushing into the case as it gets more air thru the power supply

The computer is probably getting too hot then.
You should check the electric cooling fans to make sure they turn freely. If they dont spin well, you should replace them
